Start by identifying what is using memory, then use a manual cleanup only if you have a specific reason to test it. The project documents six memory-area options, an Immediate Cleanup action and interval-based Automatic Cleanup; it also warns that frequent cleaning may affect performance and that clearing system working sets can temporarily stall applications. MemoryCleaner’s README does not provide workload-specific presets or comparative performance results.
What to check before changing MemoryCleaner settings
A high memory-use figure does not automatically mean Windows needs its caches cleared. Standby memory contains cached code or data that is not currently in use, and Windows can release it when another use needs RAM. The lowest-priority standby data is released first. Modified memory is different: its contents must be flushed to disk before those physical pages can be reused. These descriptions come from Microsoft’s Windows Memory Cheat Sheet.
First look for the process or workload behind the slowdown. Microsoft recommends monitoring CPU, memory and disk use, reviewing processes that consume substantial resources, and closing apps you are not using. If closing unneeded apps does not help, Microsoft advises restarting. Its guidance also notes that older PCs with outdated hardware may not improve significantly through these troubleshooting steps.
For a deeper view of physical-memory allocation, use Microsoft Sysinternals RAMMap. Its views include Use Counts, Processes, Priority Summary, Physical Pages, Physical Ranges, File Summary and File Details. The File Summary tab’s Standby column can help identify cached files. RAMMap is for examining how memory is allocated; its existence is not a reason to routinely empty memory lists.

What each MemoryCleaner option does
The descriptions below reflect what TheUserWW’s project documentation says about its controls. They are not independently tested behavior, and the README does not give a universal recommendation for which options to enable.

How to choose manual or automatic cleanup
For a one-time test
- Check resource use in Windows and identify whether a particular app or workload coincides with the problem.
- In MemoryCleaner, select only the memory-area actions you intend to test, then use Immediate Cleanup. The README does not establish a required combination.
- Observe whether the original problem changes under the same workload. If it does not, do not assume that clearing more lists will help; return to investigating resource-heavy processes or other causes.
For automatic cleanup
The README says to enable Automatic Cleanup and set an interval, but it does not prescribe an interval or establish that continuous or frequent cleaning improves performance. Because the project warns frequent cleanup may affect performance, do not treat a shorter interval as inherently better. Choose an interval only if you have a clear reason to test recurring cleanup, and evaluate the result on your own workload.

When cleanup is not the right fix
- If a process is consuming unusually high resources, investigate that process and close apps you do not need before relying on cleanup.
- If the PC remains slow after closing unneeded apps, restart it. Persistent limitations on an older PC may reflect outdated hardware; Microsoft says an upgrade may be the best long-term option in that situation.
- If your concern is a large standby figure, remember that Windows can reclaim standby memory when other work needs RAM. Use RAMMap to inspect allocation rather than assuming the cache is competing permanently with applications.
Memory cleanup is not drive cleanup
MemoryCleaner’s listed controls concern memory areas, not files stored on a drive. To reclaim drive space, use Windows storage tools such as Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations or Disk Cleanup; Microsoft explains those options in its guide to freeing up drive space. Clearing RAM does not delete files or create disk storage.
