ChartistJSF is a JavaServer Faces (JSF) integration layer for the Chartist.js charting library. Its documented pattern is to add the libraries to a Maven project, build chart data and configuration in a managed bean, and render chart components from XHTML. The available tutorial demonstrates ChartistJSF 2.1 with PrimeFaces 6.0; that is a historical example, not evidence that those components—or ChartistJSF 3.0—work with a current Jakarta Faces or PrimeFaces stack.

What ChartistJSF does

ChartistJSF connects charts from the JavaScript-based Chartist library to JSF pages. The integration walkthrough demonstrates line, bar, and pie charts, with the JSF application supplying chart data and configuration through Java-side models and XHTML components. It is a wrapper/integration project; it is distinct from the upstream Chartist library.

The upstream Chartist project describes its role as drawing responsive charts with inline SVG in the DOM, using CSS for styling and JavaScript for configuration. In practical terms, SVG is rendered in the page, CSS controls its appearance, and JavaScript exposes chart configuration. This describes upstream Chartist’s approach; it does not prove which Chartist API or release is bundled by a particular ChartistJSF version.

How the documented JSF integration works

The DZone walkthrough demonstrates the following structure:

  1. Add the dependencies: declare ChartistJSF and the related JSF/PrimeFaces dependencies in the Maven project.
  2. Define chart data and configuration: create a managed bean that provides a chart model and its data series. The walkthrough also includes an optional listener.
  3. Render the charts: place the ChartistJSF chart components in the application’s XHTML page and connect them to the bean’s model.

The article provides examples of line, bar, and pie charts. For exact component attributes and Java model structure, follow the walkthrough for the specific version being evaluated rather than assuming its APIs match a newer release.

Versions shown in the example—and what they mean

The walkthrough’s Maven example uses org.chartistjsf:ChartistJSF:2.1 and PrimeFaces 6.0. Those are the versions in that historical example, not a current compatibility recommendation. The ChartistJSF release page lists v3.0; its notes describe plugin support and an updated core chart library. The same release page also notes that 2.1 was compatible with PrimeFaces 6.0. None of those statements establishes compatibility with current Jakarta Faces namespaces or current PrimeFaces versions.

Maven Repository’s ChartistJSF 2.1 metadata dates that artifact to December 22, 2016. This is secondary metadata, so verify the artifact and its dependency details in repository records before adopting it. The date reinforces that the tutorial should be read as an example of the integration pattern, not as a guide to a modern framework stack.

What to verify before using ChartistJSF

Compatibility depends on the exact versions in your application, not just on the library’s name or the existence of a release. Check these points against the artifact and project records for the specific release you intend to use:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • JSF namespace and runtime: confirm whether the release works with your application’s JSF or Jakarta Faces version and namespace.
  • PrimeFaces version: confirm compatibility with the exact PrimeFaces version in your project. The historical note about PrimeFaces 6.0 does not extend that compatibility to later versions.
  • Chartist version and API: establish which upstream Chartist release is included or expected, then check that its API matches your needs. The current Chartist examples and legacy v0.11 examples represent different documentation contexts; the legacy page recommends Chartist v1 rather than treating v0.11 as current.
  • Charts and interactions: confirm the chart types, events, listener behavior, and any AJAX interactions your page requires. The walkthrough’s examples do not establish support for every interaction your application may need.
  • Styling and responsiveness: check how the rendered SVG behaves in your layouts and whether its CSS can meet your responsive and visual requirements.
  • Dependencies and security: inspect transitive dependencies and relevant advisories for the exact artifact version rather than relying on an undated or secondary summary.
  • Maintenance fit: assess the wrapper and upstream library separately. A release listing alone does not establish ongoing maintenance or compatibility with a current framework stack.

How to compare it with another charting approach

Choose based on the requirements your application must satisfy, rather than on an assumed speed advantage. The available sources provide no performance benchmark or current side-by-side comparison for ChartistJSF.

Comparison question What to establish
Chart coverage Whether the exact release supports the chart types your pages require.
Framework fit Whether it works with your JSF/Jakarta Faces namespace and PrimeFaces version.
Interaction behavior Whether the required events, listeners, and AJAX flows work in your application.
Rendering and styling Whether SVG output, CSS customization, and responsive behavior fit your layouts.
Maintenance and dependencies Whether the wrapper, upstream Chartist version, transitive dependencies, and security status meet your support requirements.
Performance No benchmark is established by the available sources; measure with your own data, browsers, and page behavior if performance is a deciding factor.
