To install Node.js on Windows from PowerShell or Command Prompt, run winget install OpenJS.NodeJS. For a more precise package match, use winget install --id OpenJS.NodeJS -e --source winget. Install Node.js with WinGet

Open PowerShell or Command Prompt.

Run
winget install OpenJS.NodeJS. Microsoft uses this as its Node.js WinGet example in Coming to Windows development. -
Follow any prompts to accept package or source terms. WinGet may request agreement before installing; its install command reference documents options for accepting agreements in scripted use.
For an explicit package match, run winget install --id OpenJS.NodeJS -e --source winget. Here, --id selects the package identifier, -e requires an exact match, and --source winget specifies the package source. These options can help avoid ambiguity when package queries or sources return duplicates, as described in Microsoft’s WinGet install documentation.

Check the package before installing
To find the package identifier or inspect package details first, run:
winget search nodejs
winget show --id OpenJS.NodeJSWinGet’s search command helps identify applications and the string or ID to use for installation. Microsoft recommends show to inspect package details and the installer selected for the system.

If Windows does not recognize winget
WinGet is distributed with App Installer on Windows 11, modern versions of Windows 10, and Windows Server 2025. If the shell says winget is not recognized, check that App Installer and WinGet are available, then open a new terminal and confirm the command can be found. Microsoft’s WinGet overview includes guidance for installing or repairing the client.
Choose between a direct install and a version manager
The direct WinGet command is a simple route when you need one Node.js installation. If different projects require different Node.js versions, Microsoft’s native Windows Node.js setup guide recommends using nvm-windows to install Node.js and npm.

Before switching to a version manager, remove existing Node.js and npm installations to reduce the risk of conflicts between installation types. On Windows, use nvm-windows rather than assuming the Unix-oriented nvm used on macOS or Linux is supported; Microsoft’s setup guide points Windows users to nvm-windows.
Elevation and scripted installs
Run the install command without administrator privileges first. Some installers request elevation; Microsoft notes that applications may prompt for it when WinGet is run without elevated rights. For a script that should proceed without interactive agreement prompts, WinGet provides --accept-package-agreements and --accept-source-agreements. Use these only when it is appropriate for the script to accept those terms.
