Fedora 34 and Fedora 35 are both end of life (EOL), so Fedora 35 is not a supported or safe upgrade destination today. Fedora 34 support ended June 7, 2022, and Fedora 35 support ended December 13, 2022. Fedora 35 was released on November 2, 2021. If you are using Fedora 34 now, consult Fedora’s current upgrade guidance and choose a currently supported release. Fedora does not support upgrades from EOL releases and says such attempts are at the user’s risk.
The commands below record the historical Fedora 34-to-35 DNF procedure; do not run them now expecting a maintained system.
What to do if you are using Fedora 34 today
Do not treat Fedora 35 as a current destination: neither release receives support. Fedora’s documentation describes supported upgrade hops of at most two releases, but that guidance does not establish a specific direct route from Fedora 34 to a supported release in 2026. Check Fedora’s current documentation before choosing a path. Depending on your system and needs, a clean installation of a supported release may be more suitable than trying to preserve an EOL installation.

Historical Fedora 34-to-35 upgrade procedure
When Fedora 35 was a maintained target, the documented DNF System Upgrade flow for a traditional DNF-managed Fedora Workstation installation was:
- Back up your data. Fedora’s DNF upgrade guide recommends backing up before a system-wide upgrade; it also suggests downloading Fedora Workstation Live media as a precaution.
- Update Fedora 34 and reboot.
sudo dnf upgrade --refreshFedora says not to skip this step: updates can supply signing keys for newer releases and address upgrade-related problems.
- Download the Fedora 35 upgrade packages.
sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=35The
35value is specific to the historical target. For a current upgrade, use Fedora’s documentation to select a supported release instead. - Review the proposed transaction. The download may stop if dependencies cannot be satisfied. Third-party packages and repositories without matching target-release packages can cause problems. Fedora documents
--allowerasingas an option in some cases; inspect every proposed package removal before proceeding, and do not assume a removed package is unimportant. Check any requested GPG key fingerprint against Fedora’s security information. - Save your work and begin the offline upgrade.
sudo dnf system-upgrade rebootThis command reboots immediately into the offline upgrade process. Close programs and save open work first. After the installation, the computer reboots again into the upgraded system.
Risks and follow-up after an upgrade
Third-party repositories may lag behind Fedora releases, leaving packages unavailable for the target or creating dependency conflicts. Review repository configuration and the exact changes DNF proposes rather than forcing a transaction without understanding its effects.
