To debug code while it runs, reproduce the problem, pause execution at the relevant point, inspect the live state, and step through the code to find where what should be true stops being true. Then fix the cause and rerun the same reproduction. In a browser, start with Chrome DevTools; for a Node.js process, use the V8 Inspector or attach from VS Code.

What real-time debugging means

Real-time debugging is a controlled observation loop, not simply adding output statements and hoping they reveal the cause. Record how to trigger the problem, pause execution near the suspected code, inspect the current values and call path, and test a specific hypothesis before changing anything. After the smallest relevant fix, repeat the original trigger and check nearby cases.

A breakpoint is useful because it stops execution with the program’s live values available to inspect. Chrome for Developers describes it this way: “A breakpoint lets you pause your code in the middle of its execution, and examine all values at that moment in time.” Chrome: Debug JavaScript

Start with a reproducible failure

Before editing code, write down the exact action or input that triggers the bug, the URL or command, the runtime version, and whether the failure happens consistently. For an intermittent issue, first identify a repeatable trigger; instrumentation can change timing and make the behavior harder to reproduce.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Keep the original input and steps so you can rerun the same case after a change.
  • Note relevant environment details, such as the browser or Node.js runtime and whether the code is local, bundled, or running in a container.
  • Identify what result you expected and what you observed. That difference gives you a testable debugging hypothesis.

Choose a breakpoint that matches the trigger

In Chrome, open DevTools and select Sources. Set the narrowest breakpoint that can expose the problem. Chrome documents these breakpoint types and their uses:

Breakpoint type Use it when
Line-of-code You know the line or region where the relevant code runs.
Conditional line-of-code A line runs repeatedly, but only a particular state or iteration matters.
Logpoint You need a message without stopping execution, for example when pausing could affect timing.
DOM A particular node or its children are being changed or removed.
XHR A request URL pattern identifies the operation you need to catch.
Event listener A click, keyboard input, timer, animation, or other event starts the path.
Exception You need execution to stop when an exception is thrown, including caught exceptions if enabled.
Function You know which function is involved but not where it is called.

For a source-level pause, insert debugger; at the line you want to inspect. In the DevTools Console, debug(functionName) sets a function breakpoint when that function is in scope. See Chrome’s breakpoint reference for the documented categories.

Inspect the paused program, then step through it

  1. Read the call stack. Start with the current frame and work back toward the caller to understand how execution reached the paused line. Pay attention to the first relevant application frame rather than assuming a library frame is the cause.
  2. Check scope and values. Inspect local variables and relevant object properties. Add watch expressions for values that should remain stable or change in a specific way.
  3. Use the console carefully. While paused, evaluate expressions to examine state. Avoid expressions that mutate data if you are trying to understand the untouched failure.
  4. Step over a statement to see its result without entering a called function. Step into a call when its implementation may be responsible; step out when the callee is not the source.
  5. Find the first broken assumption. Compare the observed values with your hypothesis after each step. The useful stopping point is where an invariant first becomes false, not necessarily where the error becomes visible.

Chrome’s debugger reference covers evaluating variables while paused and stepping through execution: Chrome DevTools debugger reference.

Debug browser JavaScript, Node.js, and remote processes

The observation loop is the same across environments, but the debugger must attach to the correct runtime. Chrome DevTools is the direct option for browser JavaScript. VS Code’s built-in debugger supports JavaScript, TypeScript, and Node.js, with extension-defined support for other targets. Node.js uses the V8 Inspector protocol and offers startup flags for different attachment needs.

Target or need Where to attach Useful option
Browser JavaScript Chrome DevTools → Sources Set source, event, DOM, XHR, exception, or function breakpoints in the page’s runtime.
Code and tests in one workspace VS Code JavaScript/Node debugger Use the debugger configuration appropriate to the local process or target.
Node.js that can start while you attach V8 Inspector, optionally attached through VS Code --inspect starts execution while allowing a debugger to attach.
Node.js that must wait for a debugger V8 Inspector --inspect-wait waits for debugger attachment before execution proceeds.
Node.js startup code that must be paused immediately V8 Inspector --inspect-brk breaks on the first line.

Choose the Node.js flag according to startup timing; these modes are documented in the Node.js CLI reference. VS Code documents JavaScript debugging and remote Node.js attachment, including containers, in its Node.js debugging guide.

Attaching to Node.js in a container

VS Code can attach to Node.js on another machine or in a container. When a remote breakpoint appears at an unexpected location, check whether the paths in the running process correspond to the paths in your workspace. Container path mappings, the deployed revision, and source maps can all affect where a breakpoint binds. A successful attachment alone does not establish that the debugger is showing the exact source you edited.

Check source maps when code is transformed

TypeScript, Babel, bundlers, and minifiers can transform authored code into a different JavaScript file. Source maps tell the debugger how generated code corresponds to the original files. When a breakpoint is hollow, shifts to generated code, or never binds, check that the running artifact matches your local build, the deployed JavaScript references a valid map, the debugger loaded the intended map, and remote paths are mapped correctly.

A bound breakpoint is evidence that mapping succeeded for that location; it is not proof that the deployed artifact is the revision you intended to debug. VS Code documents source-map support for browser debugging in its browser debugging guide.

Troubleshoot common debugging failures

  • The breakpoint never binds: Confirm the file is loaded, the running build matches your local source, and source maps and path mappings are valid.
  • The breakpoint hits too often: Add a condition to narrow the relevant state, or use a logpoint if you need observations without pausing.
  • The bug appears only after an event: Use an event-listener, DOM, or XHR breakpoint that matches the trigger.
  • An exception is swallowed: Enable pausing on caught exceptions and inspect the first relevant non-library frame.
  • The Node.js process exits before you attach: Start it with --inspect-wait or --inspect-brk, depending on whether you need it to wait before execution or stop on its first line.
  • Remote attachment works, but values or locations look wrong: Verify container paths, source maps, and that the local workspace matches the deployed revision.

How to choose a debugging tool

Choose by runtime and attachment point, not by which debugger has the longest feature list. Chrome DevTools is the shortest route to browser JavaScript. VS Code is convenient when the code, tests, and debugger share a workspace. Node’s Inspector flags matter when the process’s startup timing determines whether attachment is possible. For transformed or remote code, source-map quality and path mapping can matter more than the editor.

Also consider whether pausing changes the behavior you are investigating. A breakpoint deliberately stops the program; for timing-sensitive issues, a logpoint may be less disruptive, though it still adds instrumentation. Debuggers expose asynchronous execution context as well as values, but the exact controls vary by tool and runtime.

For deeper study beyond using a debugger, The Debugging Book is a free online textbook from CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security covering fault localization, program slicing, input reduction, and automated repair, with executable examples and downloadable code.
