Nick Farrow’s MeshBoard brings a classic text-based bulletin board system to a Meshtastic LoRa mesh: a Raspberry Pi hosts the Python-powered project, while users navigate menus and play games such as Tic Tac Toe and an Escape Room over the mesh. Hackster reports that the project’s interaction works without internet access, though that does not establish that every possible setup or supporting workflow is internet-free.
What is MeshBoard?
MeshBoard is a text-based bulletin board system created by Nick Farrow for Meshtastic. Rather than relying on a conventional internet connection to reach a hosted website, the reported project provides an interactive, menu-driven experience through a mesh network. Hackster describes its software as Python-based and its host as a Raspberry Pi.
Hackster reports that users can navigate menus and play games including Tic Tac Toe and an Escape Room. Farrow described the experience as being available “all live on a mesh network with no internet required.” That statement refers to MeshBoard’s reported mesh interaction; it should not be taken as a guarantee about every installation step or related workflow. How the Raspberry Pi and Meshtastic fit together
Meshtastic is an open-source, community-driven off-grid communications project that uses LoRa radios. In MeshBoard, the Raspberry Pi is the host for the BBS software, and Meshtastic provides the radio-mesh context through which the reported interaction takes place. The Pi is not itself the LoRa radio: a compatible radio interface is also part of a Linux-hosted arrangement.

Meshtastic’s official documentation includes a Linux-hosted node path through meshtasticd and Raspberry Pi/Linux-related hardware paths. The supported-device guidance is the right starting point for checking whether a particular radio and host configuration are compatible; support depends on the hardware and software configuration. What is—and is not—known about Farrow’s build
The project coverage identifies a Raspberry Pi host and a Python-powered BBS, but it does not establish the exact LoRa radio or HAT, wiring, software versions, or installation procedure used in Farrow’s build. It therefore is not enough to reproduce the project step by step or to name a specific radio as the one he used.

For anyone attempting a similar build, use the current Meshtastic hardware documentation to choose a supported radio and verify the Linux-host path before assembling a parts list or following installation instructions. The available reporting does not provide project-specific measurements for range, reliability, throughput, power use, security configuration, or compatibility across Raspberry Pi models.

MeshBoard illustrates a use of a LoRa mesh beyond exchanging ordinary messages: a host can provide a text interface and small interactive experiences to mesh users. Farrow also characterized Meshtastic as a low-cost, flexible local-communication option with encryption available when needed. That is his description, not an independent assessment of cost or security; the project report does not detail MeshBoard’s security configuration.

For a practical experiment, the choice between a standalone supported Meshtastic radio and a Linux host plus radio interface depends on the goal. Consider documented compatibility, setup effort, power and portability needs, and whether a host-based interface is useful. The available sources provide no comparative benchmarks that establish one approach as faster, more reliable, or better overall.
