For a downloaded archive, follow the theme’s own instructions; a common manual method is to extract its theme folder to ~/.themes, then select the components it provides in Themes.
Where to find Cinnamon themes
Start with Cinnamon Spices, the official Cinnamon add-ons repository. Its themes change the look and feel of the Cinnamon desktop. The site displayed 571 spices on September 30, 2026; that is a live catalogue count, not a count of themes alone.
You can also browse and install Spices from Cinnamon’s System Settings. Linux Mint describes both the in-settings route and visiting the Spices website as ways to get Spices. A Linux Mint forum question from July 27, 2026, asks where to download Cinnamon themes; the official catalogue is the direct answer: Linux Mint Forums.

Use the Themes module’s available options to find or install the theme, then select the components it offers. A theme may include only some components; choose only those listed for that theme.
Install a downloaded theme archive
If the theme is not available through the Themes module, use its listing’s instructions. A documented per-user method is to extract the theme folder into ~/.themes. The tilde represents your home directory, and the dot makes .themes a hidden folder. Follow the theme’s own directory instructions if they differ.

Download the archive from the theme’s listing or another source you trust.

Extract it, following any folder or installation directions provided by the theme author.

Place the theme folder in
~/.themeswhen the theme uses that per-user installation method. -
Open System Settings → Themes and select the available theme components.

For example, the Adapta theme listing instructs users to select the theme as Desktop, Controls, and Window Borders. Those choices apply to Adapta; other themes may provide a different set of components.
Check compatibility before selecting a theme
Read the compatibility notes on the specific theme’s listing. Do not assume that a theme supports every Cinnamon release or every Linux Mint version. For example, Adapta’s listing states support for Cinnamon 3.2.x through 6.6.x and says its GTK3 themes require GTK 3.20 or later. These are Adapta-specific requirements, not general guarantees for Cinnamon themes.

Linux Mint’s documentation portal lists Linux Mint 22.3 as its recommended version, but that does not establish compatibility for every theme. Check the theme’s current notes and the components it actually supplies. The portal is at Linux Mint Documentation.

Prefer a theme’s Cinnamon Spices listing when it is available, and review its compatibility and maintenance details before installing. An external archive may be packaged differently or may not work properly; do not assume that every download has been vetted.
In a January 20, 2017 post, Clem of the Linux Mint team warned that some Spices were packaged incorrectly or failed to work, and that in extreme cases some caused Cinnamon to crash or fail to load. That post explains the project’s quality concerns; it is not a report of a current incident. Read “Changes to Cinnamon Spices”.
