Gmail will then wait for you to choose whether to show images in a message. This reduces automatic image loading, but it does not block every way a sender might detect an email open.
Turn off automatic external images in Gmail
Google says Gmail displays images automatically by default. The ask-first setting changes that behavior: external images stay hidden unless you choose to display them. The setting is available in Gmail on desktop, Android, and iPhone or iPad; its wording differs slightly in the Android app.
On a computer
- Open Gmail and select Settings.
- Select See all settings.
- In the Images section, choose Ask before displaying external images.
- Save your changes.
On Android
- Open the Gmail menu and select Settings.
- Choose the account you want to change.
- Under Data usage, open Images.
- Select Ask before showing.
On iPhone or iPad
- In the Gmail app, open Menu, then Settings.
- Under Inbox, open Email preferences, then Images.
- Choose Ask before displaying external images.

Show images in a message when you want them
With ask-first enabled, legitimate images such as newsletters, receipts, or product photos may not appear until you request them. Use the message’s display-images control when you want to see them. The exact label can vary by app and language.
What this setting does—and does not do—for privacy
Many email tracking pixels are tiny external images. When an email client requests an image from a sender’s server, that request can provide a signal that the message was opened. Asking before displaying external images means Gmail does not automatically make that image request; you decide whether to load images in a particular message.

It is not a universal open-tracking blocker. Google says Gmail proxies images and prevents senders from using image loading to learn your computer or location or to set or read browser cookies. Google also cautions that senders may sometimes know whether an email containing an image was opened. The help page does not quantify how much the ask-first setting reduces tracking, so treat it as added control over external image loading, not a guarantee of anonymity.
