CVE-2026-61511 is an unauthenticated remote-code-execution flaw in vBulletin’s template runtime, and public proof-of-concept exploit code was disclosed on July 27, 2026. The disclosure came after vBulletin had reportedly released version 6.2.2 and backported fixes earlier in July. Administrators should check both their exact vBulletin branch and patch level; public exploit availability raises the risk to unpatched forums but is not evidence that attacks occurred.
What CVE-2026-61511 does
The vulnerability affects vBulletin’s vB5_Template_Runtime::runMaths() method. The GitHub Advisory Database describes an eval-injection weakness: attacker-controlled input supplied through pagenav[pagenumber] can pass through the unauthenticated ajax/render template route and reach PHP code execution. The advisory assigns CWE-95, an eval-injection category. GitHub Advisory Database: CVE-2026-61511

SSD Secure Disclosure says the method filters input with a regular expression but leaves digits, parentheses, arithmetic operators and bitwise operators such as XOR, then passes the resulting expression to PHP’s eval(). In practical terms, an unauthenticated attacker could make a vulnerable server execute PHP remotely. SSD Secure Disclosure technical advisory
The disclosure includes technical exploit details. For a general administrator, the key point is the reachable code path and lack of a login requirement; reproducing payload instructions is unnecessary to assess or remediate the risk.

Which vBulletin releases are affected?
The structured affected-version ranges in the GitHub Advisory Database are:
- vBulletin 5: 5.0.0 through 5.7.5.
- vBulletin 6: 6.0.0 through 6.2.1.
The advisory lists 6.2.2 as unaffected. SSD’s summary uses different wording, describing “6.2.1 and prior” and “6.1.6 and prior.” Because the advisory provides explicit branch ranges, use those ranges to identify potentially affected releases, then verify the exact package and patch level against vBulletin’s own guidance. A branch version alone may not tell you whether a backported patch is installed.
What administrators should do
- Identify the exact release and patch level. Check the version reported by your vBulletin installation and establish whether a vendor Patch Level 1 backport has been applied. Do not treat the branch number by itself as proof that the system is fixed.
- Move to a fixed release or apply the branch-specific backport. The advisory marks vBulletin 6.2.2 unaffected. Reporting says Patch Level 1 fixes were also made available for 6.2.1, 6.2.0 and 6.1.6. Use the vendor’s security-patch announcement and release instructions to choose the package that matches your installation: vBulletin 6.2.2 announcement and security patch announcement.
- Confirm the result. After applying the update, verify the installed release and patch level against the vendor’s package instructions. If you cannot establish that the fix is present, treat the forum as potentially vulnerable until you can.
Patch timing matters: BleepingComputer reports that vBulletin was notified on June 25, 2026, released 6.2.2 on July 1, and made Patch Level 1 backports for 6.2.1, 6.2.0 and 6.1.6 available before SSD published its disclosure and proof of concept on July 27. Proof-of-concept code becoming public can make it easier to target internet-facing forums that remain unpatched. The GitHub Advisory Database rates the flaw critical, with a CVSS v4 score of 9.3 out of 10; its vector describes network reachability, low attack complexity, no required privileges, no user interaction, and high impacts to confidentiality, integrity and availability. GitHub Advisory Database severity details
The exploit and disclosure were public on July 27, but patches were reportedly available earlier in July. That chronology is why “0-day” headlines need qualification: the public exploit appeared after vendor fixes had been released. The sources cited here do not establish whether exploitation took place during the period between patch availability and public disclosure, and they do not confirm exploitation in the wild.
The advisory also displays an EPSS score of 5.607%, at the 93rd percentile, as shown by FIRST and accessed September 30, 2026. EPSS estimates the probability of exploitation over the next 30 days; it is a time-sensitive estimate, not a record of attacks that have already happened.
