There is no universal cheapest or best log service for a startup SaaS: the bill depends on how much data you ingest, what must be searchable immediately, how long you retain it, and how much you query. Compare Datadog, Grafana Cloud Logs, Axiom, and Better Stack against the same workload—not just their headline ingest rates—and keep ELK out of the shortlist if you want a managed service.

Define the workload before comparing prices

Write down what the system must do before entering numbers into pricing calculators. A small traffic sample with long retention and frequent scans can cost differently from a large stream that is rarely queried. For each log class—such as application errors, access logs, and audit events—record:

  • Average and peak ingestion in GB per day, plus estimated monthly volume.
  • Typical event size and approximate event count per month.
  • What fraction must be immediately searchable or indexed, versus retained mainly for occasional investigation.
  • Query volume: estimated GB scanned per month, and whether queries must support alerting or interactive exploration.
  • Required online retention in days, separately by log class.
  • Expected growth, number of users or hosts if relevant to billing, and required region and security controls.
  • Whether logs need to be correlated with metrics, traces, or profiles in the same observability workflow.

Use monthly volume and retention together. A service may charge separately for receiving, processing, writing, storing, indexing, or querying data; those are not interchangeable measures.

Compare the four services on the same dimensions

Service Billing dimensions and public allowance Retention and search model Query, ingestion, and correlation Operational ownership
Datadog Separate ingestion and indexed-event charges. Public list prices include $0.10 per ingested GB and $1.70 per million indexed events at 15-day retention. Flex Logs lists storage at $0.05 per million stored events per month; Flex Logs Starter lists $0.60 per million stored events per month for the 6-, 12-, or 15-month retention options. See the Datadog price list. These are public list prices, accessed 2026-10-02; contract, billing, and regional details may differ. Distinguish data that needs indexed-log search from data on a lower-cost Flex Logs path. Datadog says Flex Logs supports historical investigation without rehydration; its launch announcement describes fixed monthly compute sizes. Confirm the applicable search and alert capabilities for the selected tier with the Flex Logs announcement. The cited pricing pages establish the separate ingestion and indexing dimensions; ingestion standards and correlation details are not stated in those cited pages. Model how much must be indexed and decide which logs can use the Flex path. The team still needs to set collection, parsing, indexing, retention, and alert policies.
Grafana Cloud Logs Four dimensions: processed GB, written GB, retained GB, and queried GB above fair use. Grafana documents 50 GB written per month free before written-volume charges and query fair use up to 100 times written volume per month. The product page also lists an always-free tier with 50 GB ingested per month. These figures refer to different measures, not one interchangeable allowance. See Logs pricing documentation and Grafana Cloud Logs. Free accounts have a documented 14-day minimum retention; paid accounts, 30 days. Retention beyond 30 days is charged in additional 30-day increments. The service is powered by Loki. Uses LogQL and offers Logs Drilldown; Grafana describes logs alongside metrics, traces, and profiles. Pro starting rates listed on the product page are $0.05 per GB processed, $0.40 per GB written, and $0.10 per GB retained. Processed volume reflects data arriving; dropping or optimizing data can reduce written volume. Choose what to process, what to write, and what to retain, and manage the resulting query use. Loki-based log handling does not remove the need to configure parsing, retention, and alerting for the workload.
Axiom Axiom’s comparison page characterizes its pricing as usage-based across loaded data, queries, storage, and a platform fee; that description is vendor-authored, not an independent cost comparison. Obtain a workload-specific estimate from Axiom’s current pricing calculator before comparing totals. See Axiom’s Datadog comparison. Axiom’s FAQ documents 30-day retention on the free Personal plan. Axiom Cloud and BYOC can configure retention to customer needs, including “Forever”; confirm the chosen plan’s terms in the Axiom FAQ. The cited sources describe log management and analytics but do not establish a specific query language or ingestion standard for this comparison. Validate the query workflow and required integrations in the current product documentation. Include the platform fee and the team’s needs for loading, querying, and storage in the quote. Retention configuration and deployment model are choices to validate for the selected offering.
Better Stack Logs & Traces pricing lists 3 GB per month retained for 3 days included, $0.10 per GB ingested, $0.05 per GB per month retained, standard querying included, and query boost at $0.001 per GB scanned. These are vendor-listed public prices accessed 2026-10-02; check the current pricing page for applicable bundles and terms. Retention can be configured by source, according to the log management product page. Bundles that include 30-day log retention have varying allowances and prices. Better Stack describes collection through Vector, Syslog, or OpenTelemetry, plus eBPF collectors; VRL transformations can redact PII or discard events. It describes SQL queries through an HTTP API. Collection method, transformations, and per-source retention require configuration. Self-serve clusters are listed in Virginia, Oregon, Germany, and Singapore; custom deployments can be requested. Verify region and account availability for your needs.

All vendor price and plan figures in this comparison are published public information accessed on 2026-10-02 and may change. The sources primarily describe US-dollar public pricing; local currency, taxes, negotiated contracts, account eligibility, and regional availability may differ.

Understand what each pricing model makes you measure

Datadog: separate the indexed workload from the stored workload

Model indexed events and Flex Logs separately rather than applying the indexed-event rate to every event or assuming storage alone buys the same search experience. Datadog’s Flex Logs announcement supports historical investigation without rehydration, but the relevant comparison is still whether the data and queries your team needs fit that path. Ask for a quote if contract terms, log volume, or region could change the list-price comparison.

Grafana Cloud: processed is not the same as written

Grafana’s billing dimensions make data reduction consequential: filtering, transforming, or dropping events can lower the written amount, while processed volume reflects what reaches the service. Estimate both, along with retained volume and query scans. Do not treat the 50 GB written allowance as equivalent to the product page’s 50 GB ingested free-tier figure; they describe different measures.

Axiom: verify the quote with your own scenario

Better Stack: include scans and retention, not only ingestion

Its listed standard querying is included, while query boost is metered by scanned GB. A workload with substantial scans should therefore be modeled separately from one using only standard querying. Likewise, check whether a bundle’s included 30-day retention matches your required volume and billing cadence rather than assuming the bundle is automatically less expensive.

Build a repeatable cost worksheet

Use one row per log class, then calculate the same scenario in each vendor’s calculator or quote process. Record assumptions next to every result so a change in retention or searchable share does not get mistaken for a vendor price change.

Input Value to record Why it matters
Ingestion Average GB/day, peak GB/day, and monthly GB Separates normal traffic from bursts and supplies the workload basis for volume-based charges.
Event shape Average event size and events/month Needed where pricing uses event counts as well as data volume.
Searchability Percentage indexed or expected to be queried frequently Lets you isolate the searchable subset from logs kept chiefly for history.
Query use Scans in GB/month and required query or alert behavior Captures query-related charges and tests whether the service’s search model fits operations.
Retention Days online by log class Prevents a short-retention high-volume class from being priced as though every log needs the same period.
Growth and scale Monthly growth estimate, users, and hosts where billed Shows whether an apparently affordable starting workload remains viable as the SaaS grows.
Deployment constraints Required region, security controls, and deployment model Rules out options that cannot meet requirements or changes the quote and availability.
Cost output Base service, ingestion/processing, indexing, retention, queries, support, and bundled observability Keeps necessary costs distinct from optional tiers and bundled features.
  1. Choose a representative month, including a realistic peak, and convert log volume to monthly GB using the same units for all vendors.
  2. Split the workload into log classes and assign each one a searchable fraction and retention target.
  3. Estimate query scans and note whether logs must drive alerts or simply support occasional incident investigation.
  4. Enter those same values into each vendor’s current calculator or quote request. Map each vendor’s billing units to the worksheet rather than assuming the units match.
  5. Separate mandatory costs from optional indexing, longer retention, query tiers, support, and bundled observability components.
  6. Recalculate with expected growth and verify price, region, account eligibility, and retention terms before procurement.

Shortlist by fit, then validate with a pilot

  • Prioritize cross-signal observability: put Grafana Cloud Logs on the shortlist if LogQL and viewing logs with metrics, traces, and profiles match the team’s existing workflow.
  • Need a split between indexed search and historical investigation: evaluate Datadog’s indexed and Flex Logs options against the specific searches and alerts operators need.
  • Want configurable retention or a BYOC option: include Axiom, then validate plan details and a workload-based quote.
  • Prefer SQL-oriented access and flexible collection: test Better Stack’s documented SQL/API workflow and the collector or transformation choices your stack needs.

Run a bounded pilot using representative logs, an incident-style query, a retention check, and a redaction test if sensitive data is involved. Compare the resulting cost estimate and operational fit, but do not infer a universal winner from a pilot or vendor savings claim: these services have not been independently benchmarked here for total cost, setup time, or user experience.
