JavaScript remains one of the most widely used programming languages because it powers interactive browser experiences and also runs in server-side and other non-browser environments. But “on top” depends on how popularity is measured: Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey reports JavaScript use among respondents at 66%, while GitHub says TypeScript moved ahead of JavaScript by contributor count in August 2025.
Why JavaScript remains widely used
It is the language of interactive web pages
JavaScript’s long-standing place in browsers gives it a central role in building interactive websites and web applications. The State of JavaScript survey identifies frontend development as its most common use, with backend development also substantial (State of JavaScript usage).
The same language can run beyond the browser
JavaScript can also run in non-browser environments such as Node.js. That lets developers use it for both browser-facing interfaces and server-side work. The language itself is standardized as ECMAScript; browser features such as the DOM are APIs provided by the browser, not part of the core language (MDN: JavaScript).
A broad ecosystem supports continued use
JavaScript supports imperative, functional, and object-oriented programming styles, and its ecosystem spans many kinds of web development. GitHub’s 2025 Octoverse report describes JavaScript and TypeScript together as accounting for more platform activity than Python alone. That is a statement about GitHub activity, not a universal ranking of languages or workloads (GitHub Octoverse).

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the 2025 popularity figures actually show
Different rankings describe different populations and activity. Stack Overflow asks survey respondents about their own work; GitHub counts activity and contributors on its platform; State of JavaScript surveys people who use JavaScript. These figures are useful, but none is a census of every programmer.
| Measure | What it reports | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Stack Overflow 2025 language survey | 66% of respondents reported JavaScript use in the programming-language results. The language question received 31,771 responses, or 64.8% of survey respondents. | Respondents were asked which languages they had done extensive development work in over the past year. It measures survey respondents’ reported work, not all developers worldwide. (Stack Overflow 2025 technology results) |
| GitHub 2025 contributor data | JavaScript had 2.15 million contributors; TypeScript overtook JavaScript and Python by contributor count in August 2025. | This is a GitHub platform ranking by contributor count, not a measure of every developer or every kind of language use. (GitHub Octoverse) |
Is JavaScript still the most popular programming language?
There is no single answer without specifying a metric. Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey shows JavaScript remains widely reported among respondents, while GitHub’s contributor ranking puts TypeScript ahead of JavaScript in August 2025. Those findings are compatible: they measure different populations and activity, and JavaScript still has a large contributor base.

TypeScript is closely related to JavaScript, rather than a wholly separate ecosystem. GitHub’s results point to a shift toward typed JavaScript as well as continued JavaScript activity. Counting JavaScript alone can therefore tell a different story from considering JavaScript and TypeScript together.
