Occam’s Razor is a rule for comparing explanations: when two explanations fit the same evidence about equally well, prefer the one that requires fewer unsupported assumptions, entities, or mechanisms. It is a useful discipline for investigation—not a guarantee that the shortest or simplest story is true.
What Occam’s Razor means
The usual formulation is “Entities are not to be multiplied beyond necessity.” In practical terms, do not add causes, objects, rules, or hidden processes unless the evidence requires them.
The key qualification is other things being equal. A simple explanation is preferable only when competing explanations have comparable explanatory fit, scope, and predictive value. If a more elaborate account explains observations that the simple account cannot, parsimony does not justify discarding the extra detail.
Syntactic and ontological simplicity
- Syntactic simplicity: how many principles, equations, rules, or clauses an explanation uses, and how compactly they are stated.
- Ontological simplicity: how many different kinds of entities, properties, or mechanisms the explanation says exist.
A theory can be compact on paper yet ontologically elaborate, or use several equations to describe a small number of entities. Comparing both dimensions prevents “simple” from becoming a vague synonym for “short.”

Is the simplest explanation always correct?
No. Occam’s Razor is a conditional heuristic, not a truth detector. A simple explanation that ignores important evidence is not preferable merely because it has fewer parts. Real systems can be complicated, and an explanation may need additional mechanisms to account for reliable observations, exceptions, or successful predictions.
Parsimony also does not mean choosing the explanation with the fewest words. An account can appear simple only because it leaves crucial assumptions unstated. The relevant comparison is between the total commitments each explanation makes and how well each performs against the evidence.
How to apply Occam’s Razor step by step
- Define the same problem for every candidate. State exactly which observations, measurements, or symptoms must be explained. Do not compare one explanation’s full scope with another’s narrower scope.
- List the rival explanations. Write each account as explicit premises and causal steps. Making hidden assumptions visible often changes which account is actually simpler.
- Check evidence fit. Ask whether each account explains the same observations without special pleading, ignored data, or ad hoc exceptions.
- Count additional commitments. Note unsupported premises, new entities, distinct mechanisms, auxiliary rules, and required coincidences.
- Compare scope and predictions. Prefer the account that explains at least as much and makes comparably useful, testable predictions with fewer commitments.
- Test robustness. Look for counterexamples and boundary conditions. Reject an explanation that is “simple” only because it omits details known to matter.
- Keep the conclusion provisional. New evidence can make a previously unnecessary mechanism necessary, so parsimony should guide revision rather than end inquiry.
A practical comparison grid
| Axis | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Evidence fit | Do both explanations account for the same observations? |
| Assumptions | Which explanation adds fewer unsupported premises? |
| Entities and mechanisms | Which one posits fewer kinds of things or causal steps? |
| Scope and predictions | Does the simpler account explain as much and make comparably useful predictions? |
| Robustness | Does it survive known counterexamples, or is it simple only because it omits necessary detail? |
Examples in everyday problem-solving
A computer that will not connect to Wi-Fi
Start with ordinary, testable causes: Wi-Fi disabled, wrong password, an outage, distance from the access point, or a driver problem. These require fewer unsupported assumptions than a theory involving deliberate interference or an unknown hardware exploit. Check each common cause, but move to a more complex explanation if tests rule the simpler ones out or the evidence points elsewhere.

A phone battery that suddenly drains
Compare a recently installed app, high screen brightness, poor cellular reception, a battery-health decline, and a background process before assuming malware. The first explanations are easier to test and introduce fewer unverified entities. If battery statistics show an unfamiliar process using power, that evidence can justify a more specific account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA failed software deployment
Check configuration differences, missing environment variables, dependency versions, permissions, and service logs before proposing a rare compiler defect or a coordinated external attack. A multi-factor explanation may ultimately be correct, but each added factor should earn its place through evidence.
Occam’s Razor in science
Scientific theories are compared by more than elegance. Researchers examine whether a model fits observations, survives attempts to falsify it, covers the relevant range of cases, and makes successful predictions. Parsimony favors a model that achieves comparable performance with fewer independent assumptions, entities, or adjustable mechanisms.

The principle is visible in several historical traditions. Discussions of simplicity reach back to Aristotle and Aquinas and continue through Galileo, Newton, and Lavoisier. In Principia Mathematica (1687), Newton wrote: “We are to admit no more causes of natural things than such as are both true and sufficient to explain their appearances.” He also wrote, “Nature is pleased with simplicity, and affects not the pomp of superfluous causes.” These are methodological rules about adequate causes, not a claim that nature must always look simple to humans.
Who was William of Ockham?
William of Ockham (about 1285–1347/49 in the standard reference tradition) was a Franciscan philosopher and theologian associated with nominalism and methodological economy. The general preference for fewer principles or causes predates him, so he did not invent the entire idea of explanatory simplicity.

The slogan commonly linked to him—“Entities are not to be multiplied beyond necessity”—is a standard formulation of the principle, but scholars caution that the exact modern wording is not securely established as a sentence Ockham himself wrote. The name “Occam’s razor” is also later: the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy identifies Sir William Hamilton’s 1852 work as the first known use of the term. “Occam” and “Ockham” are both used in English; “Ockham” reflects the philosopher’s name.

Why it is called a “razor”
The razor is a metaphor for shaving away surplus concepts from an explanation. It does not mean cutting away inconvenient evidence or automatically selecting the shortest answer. The “cut” should remove only commitments that are unnecessary after the evidence and explanatory requirements are fixed.
Common mistakes and safeguards
- Mistake: “The simplest story wins.” Safeguard: require comparable evidence fit before rewarding simplicity.
- Mistake: counting words instead of commitments. Safeguard: list hidden premises, entities, mechanisms, and exceptions.
- Mistake: treating unfamiliarity as complexity. Safeguard: count what the explanation assumes, not how strange it sounds.
- Mistake: ignoring domain knowledge. Safeguard: include established mechanisms even when they make the account less compact.
- Mistake: using parsimony to stop testing. Safeguard: state what observation would make an added mechanism necessary.
Occam’s Razor versus related ideas
Occam’s Razor is not the same as “the simplest explanation is true,” nor is it a ban on complex theories. It is also distinct from choosing the most familiar cause, the most likely cause based on prior frequencies, or the explanation with the fewest parameters regardless of fit. Those decisions may use probability, engineering constraints, or model-selection criteria in addition to parsimony.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Ockham actually write the exact razor slogan?
The wording is a standard formulation associated with his principle, but scholarship cautions that the familiar modern sentence is not securely documented as Ockham’s exact surviving wording.

When should I reject a simpler explanation?
Reject it when it fails to explain relevant evidence, requires repeated exceptions, has weaker predictive performance, or survives only by leaving necessary details unstated.
The Bottom Line
Use Occam’s Razor after fixing the evidence and scope of the problem: among explanations that perform comparably well, favor the one with fewer unsupported assumptions, entities, and mechanisms. Let the evidence—not a preference for neat stories—decide when complexity is necessary.
