SOCKS5 is a flexible relay for TCP and UDP traffic; an HTTP proxy understands HTTP and can apply web-specific rules. For ordinary browser and API traffic, either can carry HTTPS: an HTTP proxy commonly uses CONNECT to make a tunnel, while TLS still protects the connection between your device and the destination. Choose based on the protocols and controls you need—not an assumed speed advantage.
What is the difference between SOCKS5 and an HTTP proxy?
The main difference is the layer each proxy works at. SOCKS5 negotiates a relay between an application and a network destination, then forwards the application’s bytes without interpreting HTTP messages. An HTTP proxy handles HTTP requests and responses, so it can apply rules specific to web traffic.
The IETF defines SOCKS5 in RFC 1928 as a framework for traversing firewalls in both TCP and UDP domains. The service is conventionally associated with TCP port 1080, though a particular proxy may use another port. HTTP proxy behavior is described in RFC 9110, which defines a proxy as “a message-forwarding agent that is chosen by the client.”
How the two proxy types compare
| Feature | SOCKS5 | HTTP proxy |
|---|---|---|
| What it understands | SOCKS negotiation and destination details; relays payload bytes without interpreting HTTP. | HTTP requests and responses; can also establish a tunnel with CONNECT. |
| Traffic scope | TCP and UDP relay support are defined by RFC 1928. | Forwards HTTP requests. CONNECT can establish a tunnel to a host and port, typically for HTTPS over TCP. |
| Typical fit | Non-HTTP applications, mixed protocols, and workloads that need UDP relay. | Browsers and API tools needing HTTP-specific rules or visibility. |
| Policy options | Does not inherently provide HTTP-level filtering or header controls. | May support HTTP authentication, filtering, logging, header policies, or caching; availability depends on the proxy’s implementation and configuration. |
| Encryption | SOCKS5 itself is not a general encryption layer. Security depends on authentication and encapsulation methods, plus any security the application provides. | Proxy authentication is separate from TLS. HTTPS confidentiality can be provided by TLS between the client and destination through a CONNECT tunnel. |
| Speed | No standards-based universal speed advantage is established. | No standards-based universal speed disadvantage is established; implementation and workload matter. |
Can an HTTP proxy handle HTTPS?
Yes. A client can ask an HTTP proxy to use CONNECT to establish a tunnel to a destination host and port. Once the tunnel is active, the proxy acts as a blind relay and does not change the tunneled messages. For HTTPS, TLS runs between the client and destination inside that tunnel.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
CONNECT does not make an untrusted proxy equivalent to an end-to-end encrypted path by itself. The proxy can observe connection metadata and information exposed before or outside TLS. It can also read plaintext HTTP traffic that is not protected by TLS.
Does SOCKS5 encrypt your traffic?
No—not by itself. SOCKS5 can negotiate authentication methods, but authentication is not the same as encrypting the data being relayed. RFC 1928 says the security of traversal depends on the authentication and encapsulation methods used by a particular implementation. For confidentiality, use TLS or another secure protocol between your application and its destination, and authenticate the proxy where supported.

Which should you choose?
Choose an HTTP proxy for web-aware controls
An HTTP proxy is a natural fit when a browser, crawler, or API client mainly sends HTTP(S) traffic and you need controls such as HTTP-specific allowlists, header rules, filtering, authentication, or logs. These are capabilities an implementation may offer, not features guaranteed by the proxy type.
Choose SOCKS5 for protocol flexibility or UDP
SOCKS5 is a better fit when an application is not HTTP-native, when different protocols need to share a relay, or when the workload requires UDP. Confirm that the particular SOCKS5 service supports the traffic and authentication method your client needs.

Check DNS behavior and proxy trust
Find out whether the application resolves destination names locally or asks the proxy to resolve them. That behavior varies by implementation and can affect both privacy and whether a destination is reachable. Treat either proxy as a party that may see connection metadata, and use end-to-end encryption for sensitive traffic.

There is no standards-based answer that SOCKS5 is always faster, or that HTTP proxies are always slower. The standards describe protocol behavior, not a universal speed benchmark. Results depend on the proxy’s implementation, its configuration, network conditions, and the workload. No comparative speed figure is established by the cited standards.
