These 15 concise facts focus on what Google documents about Google Analytics, with product-specific limits clearly distinguished from universal rules about analytics.
What analytics does—and what its numbers mean
1. Analytics starts with collected activity
Google describes Google Analytics as a platform that collects data from websites and apps and turns it into business reports. That is Google’s description of its own service, not a definition that applies to every analytics product. Google Analytics Help: How Google Analytics works.
2. One reporting system can use different data tables
Google says Analytics keeps aggregated tables for common requests that need quick answers, alongside more detailed event- and user-level tables for flexible investigations. For a request, it selects the table it considers most accurate under the applicable default sampling settings. Google Analytics Help: About data sampling.
3. Sampling means estimating from a subset
When a query uses a sample rather than all the relevant event-level data, its result is an approximation. Google says Analytics may sample event-level data when a query exceeds a property’s quota limit; its data-quality indicator marks sampled results, and a larger sample generally improves accuracy. Sampling is a reporting behavior, not evidence that every Analytics report is sampled.

4. Standard-property event-level queries have a documented 10-million-event limit
Google documents a limit of 10 million events for event-level queries on standard Google Analytics properties. It is a product query limit—not a cap on all data collected, nor a general limit for analytics software.
5. Analytics 360’s documented event-level query limit can reach 1 billion
For Analytics 360 properties, Google documents event-level query limits of up to 1 billion events. The figure applies to the property type and query context described by Google, not to every Analytics 360 operation or other analytics platform.

6. Unsampled distinct counts can still be estimates
Google says unsampled reports use HyperLogLog++ (HLL++) to estimate distinct counts for commonly used metrics such as users and sessions. “Unsampled” therefore does not necessarily mean every distinct count is an exact tally.
7. Google says HLL++ discrepancies are below 1% in most cases—not all
Google Analytics Help says discrepancy rates are less than 1% in most cases, but can be higher, especially when multiple HLL++ metrics are combined. Treat that as Google’s qualified description of typical behavior, not an accuracy guarantee.

What Google Analytics benchmarks can—and cannot—tell you
8. Google says benchmarks became available on May 30, 2024
Google’s documentation says benchmarking became available from May 30, 2024. Eligible properties can compare with peer groups using the 25th percentile, median, and 75th percentile. Availability depends on eligibility; the documented date is not a promise that every property can access benchmarks.
9. A benchmark peer group is defined, not the whole market
Google says peer groups are based on properties assigned the same industry category. The category reflects the selection made during setup and signals such as property URLs and app attributes. A comparison therefore describes a category-based peer group, not every competitor or business in an industry.

10. Some benchmark totals are ranges, not precise competitor figures
For absolute metrics such as revenue or active users, Google says it displays an estimated range based on a property’s active-user count. A benchmark can help put performance in context, but it does not reveal a precise value for an individual competitor. Google Analytics Help: Benchmarking.
Analytics is about decisions, not just counts
11. A tracked action is more useful when it represents an outcome
Google’s March 21, 2024 product post gives email sign-ups and purchases as examples of customer actions relevant to business measurement. The practical point is to connect tracked events to decisions or outcomes that matter, rather than treating every recorded interaction as equally meaningful. 12. Privacy affects how advertising performance is measured
In that March 2024 post, Google described changes intended to measure advertising performance in a privacy-first environment. It is a dated product announcement; it does not establish that any particular advertiser will achieve better results.
13. Google’s 2024 product roadmap included several areas of investment
A June 26, 2024 Google product post described AI-generated insights, cross-channel measurement, budgeting and planning tools, and privacy-first integrations as areas of investment. Those are claims about Google’s product direction at that date, not a guarantee that every capability is currently available to every account. Google’s June 2024 Analytics product post.

14. Ask what data the tool handles and where you can use it
Before comparing analytics products, check whether each handles websites, apps, or both, and whether the data is available in reports, through an API, or by export. Google’s own description covers collection from websites and apps, but individual products can differ in scope and access.
15. Check how results are processed before comparing them
Find out whether the reporting surface uses aggregation, sampling, estimates, or peer-group benchmarks, and how privacy-related measurement is handled. A number is most useful when you know what it represents, what data and processing produced it, and what comparison—if any—it supports.
