The Snapduino NPN Motor project uses a Snapduino output and an NPN transistor to control a Snap Circuits analog motor. Hackster specifies an SC-300 kit plus a Snapduino as the minimum equipment. Its example sketch runs the motor for three seconds, stops it for three seconds, and repeats that pattern while the circuit is powered.
What equipment does the project require?
Hackster lists the SC-300 and Snapduino as the minimum set for this project. The SC-300 alone should not be assumed to include a Snapduino; confirm that the board is included in the package you have.
The project page’s hardware list also names a Snap Circuits kit, Snapduino, Snap-FTDI cable, and other board and project components. For the related build’s component and step details, the linked PDF lists a resistor, diode, slide switch, motor, PNP transistor, battery holder, jumper wire, and connection pieces. Its title is “Snapduino PNP Motor,” however, so those instructions describe a PNP circuit and should not be treated as the build instructions for this NPN project.
How does the NPN transistor control the motor?
The Snap Circuits manual describes an NPN transistor as having base, emitter, and collector connections. A small current between base and emitter allows a larger current to flow between collector and emitter. In the project, the Snapduino’s output controls the transistor, which switches the motor circuit; the Snapduino output is not simply being used as the motor’s power source.

The manual’s project #132, “NPN Collector – Motor,” is an instructional comparison circuit. It describes a collector arrangement and contrasts it with project #133’s emitter arrangement, where the motor runs at a lower speed than in #132. These are manual-described circuit comparisons, not independent performance measurements of the Snapduino project.
What does the example program do?
The project sketch sets a pin as an output, drives it HIGH for three seconds, then LOW for three seconds. That on/off sequence repeats while the circuit remains powered. The timing describes the programmed demonstration, not a guaranteed motor speed or a measured specification.

Why might the motor or fan fail to start?
In the manual’s NPN motor activity, a resistor setting with too much resistance can leave the motor unable to overcome friction, so the fan may not move. The manual directs users to replace the batteries if the fan fails to move at any resistor setting.
- Check that the motor and fan are connected as directed for the circuit you are building.
- If adjusting the resistor is part of the activity, try the available settings; excessive resistance may prevent startup.
- If the fan does not move at any setting, replace the batteries as the manual recommends.
Elenco’s FAQ says to use only battery holders included with the set, or its AC-SNAP supply instead of batteries. Do not combine battery holders or use that supply alongside batteries. Follow the instructions for the specific Snap Circuits edition you own.

How do you handle the motor safely?
The Electronic Snap Circuits manual warns: “WARNING: Moving parts. Do not touch the fan or motor during operation. Do not lean over the motor.” Keep hands and face away while the motor is running.
