Genden Phuntsok plays Tenzing Norgay in Apple’s Tenzing; Tom Hiddleston plays Edmund Hillary, and Willem Dafoe plays expedition leader Colonel John Hunt. Apple’s cast listing does not include Tenzing Norgay Trainor, despite the name’s appearance in some versions of the film’s title.
Who plays the main characters in Tenzing?
The film’s central roles reflect three different positions in the Everest expedition: Tenzing is the climber seeking recognition as a team member, Hillary is his climbing partner, and Hunt is the expedition leader whose agreement they seek.

Is Tenzing Norgay Trainor in the Apple TV movie?
Apple identifies Genden Phuntsok as the actor playing Tenzing Norgay. Tenzing Norgay Trainor does not appear in Apple’s displayed cast list, so the available official listing does not support saying that Trainor has a role in the film. The similarity between the film’s subject’s name and Trainor’s name is the likely source of the confusion.
What is the film about?
Apple describes Tenzing as a feature film based on true events, focused on the 1953 Everest ascent. Its synopsis follows Tenzing’s effort to join the British climbing team as a climber rather than remain in a serving role, with support from Hillary, Dawa and Henderson. It also frames a conflict over colonial rank, class, background and ambition.

- Factory sealed DVD
The synopsis contrasts Western climbers’ desire to conquer Everest with Tenzing’s reverence for Chomolungma as a sacred mother goddess. That is the film’s stated framing; the official film materials establish the cast and synopsis, not a full independent history of the expedition.
Who made Tenzing?
Jennifer Peedom directs the film, and Luke Davies is its writer. Apple’s September 16, 2026 trailer announcement credits Peedom and Davies with the story, with Peedom directing.
