Its defining control was the Working Set, which limited where Copilot Edits would make changes, apart from a proposed new file. The feature is distinct from the later Next Edit Suggestions experience, which surfaces likely follow-on edits as you work.
What was Copilot Edits in VS Code?
In its November 12, 2024 announcement, Microsoft described Copilot Edits as combining the conversational flow of Copilot Chat with inline changes across a developer-managed set of files. Rather than asking only for an explanation or code snippet, a developer could describe a task, inspect proposed edits in the relevant files, accept or discard them, and give follow-up instructions. Microsoft presented the workflow as useful for both early exploration and multi-file refactoring. Read the original Copilot Edits announcement.
The name matters: Copilot Edits was the prompted, multi-file editing experience announced in 2024. It is not another name for Next Edit Suggestions, which VS Code announced separately in February 2025.
How did Copilot Edits suggestions work?
Choose the Working Set
The Working Set defined the files Copilot Edits could change. The 2024 announcement said developers could add files by dragging them into the set or using #; open, active editors were added automatically. Isidor Nikolic, a Microsoft product manager, stated: “Copilot Edits will not make changes outside of the Working Set – the only exception being when it proposes to create a new file.” The announcement described this as the boundary for suggested edits, not a guarantee that proposed code would be correct or safe.

Prompt, review, and iterate
- Include the relevant files in the Working Set, checking which active editors have been added.
- Describe the change you want in the Copilot Edits conversation.
- Inspect suggestions shown in place in the files. Accept or discard them individually rather than treating the entire response as an unquestioned change.
- Give a follow-up instruction if the result needs adjustment; the announcement also described Undo and Redo for iteration.
- Run the code and check the result. Microsoft’s workflow description put verification with the developer after reviewing the proposed changes.
That workflow made Copilot Edits more than a one-shot code generator: the proposed changes were tied to files in the editor and could be assessed piece by piece. The Working Set constrained the target files, but it did not replace reviewing diffs, testing behavior, or checking whether the code fits the project.
What model details did the preview disclose?
The 2024 post described a two-stage design: a foundation language model considered the Edits session context and generated initial suggestions, then a speculative-decoding endpoint proposed inline changes. It named GPT-4o, o1-preview, o1-mini, and Claude 3.5 Sonnet as selectable foundation models in that preview-era experience. Those names describe the November 2024 announcement, not the current model menu; the cited announcement does not establish today’s choices.

How was Next Edit Suggestions different?
In February 2025, VS Code announced Next Edit Suggestions (NES), a separate feature for anticipating related edits while a developer works. Instead of starting with a user-prompted, multi-file task and an explicitly managed Working Set, NES was described as offering an inline suggestion at a likely next edit location. The post said a suggestion could span a symbol, a line, or multiple lines. Brigit Murtaugh and Burke Holland, VS Code authors, wrote: “Suggestions can span a single symbol, an entire line, or multiple lines, depending on the scope of the potential change.” See VS Code’s Next Edit Suggestions announcement.
The interaction described in that post used Tab to navigate to a suggestion and Tab again to accept it; a gutter arrow indicated a suggestion location. The post’s examples included fixing a typo, adjusting logic, propagating a rename, using a newly introduced variable or method parameter, and updating related extension files. These were product-team examples, not independent accuracy findings.

For contemporaneous setup context, the February 2025 post said Copilot Business and Enterprise administrators needed to opt in to “Editor Preview Features,” in addition to a user enabling github.copilot.nextEditSuggestions.enabled. These historical policy and setting details should not be assumed to be current; consult VS Code’s current Copilot documentation for present setup requirements.
What changed in VS Code’s inline suggestions by September 2026?
In September 2026, VS Code described a unified “3-in-1 inline suggestions” model spanning completion-style ghost text, nearby next-edit suggestions, and longer-distance edits. Microsoft’s explanation was that these capabilities had previously followed separate model paths; the unified approach could select a suitable edit without the same client orchestration between distinct models. This is later product evolution, not a description of how the 2024 Copilot Edits preview was introduced.

In a September 16, 2026 post, Microsoft reported over 61 billion successful model requests in the preceding 90 days for GitHub Copilot / Visual Studio Code. It also reported more than 200 offline experiments and 20 online experiments during optimization. These are company-published figures, not independently audited usage or experiment counts. Read VS Code’s September 16 account of inline-suggestion unification.
A September 23, 2026 post reported that the final 3-in-1 candidate had a 10.1% decrease in dismissals against the then-production 2-in-1 model plus completions baseline in Microsoft’s online flight. The same post said there was no statistically significant regression in the key metrics it named and reported a 13% decrease in the share of ghost text at the cursor versus the control. These are results for Microsoft’s flight and comparison, not a universal performance promise or an independent comparison. The post said the unified Inline Suggestions experience was available to paid GitHub Copilot users in VS Code and advised enabling next edit suggestions; check current documentation for eligibility and settings because both can change.
