Active Admin is a Rails framework for building an administration interface inside an existing Rails application. Install it using the guide for your intended release, register a model as a resource, and tailor its index so staff can find and manage records efficiently. Active Admin supplies the interface and customization tools; your application still needs an intentional access policy.
What Active Admin provides
Active Admin organizes administration around application resources, such as users, orders, or articles. A resource configuration describes how a model appears and can be managed in the admin interface. The framework documents index pages, forms, show pages, actions, and authorization integrations. Start with the official documentation index to find the feature guide that matches your task.
It is a framework installed into your Rails app, not a separate hosted admin service. The project repository lists related components and integrations, including Devise, Formtastic, Kaminari, Ransack, and Tailwind CSS. Treat that list as ecosystem context, not as a version recipe: follow the setup instructions for the Active Admin release you choose.
Install Active Admin for your app’s release
Before changing the Gemfile or running generators, check the Rails and Ruby versions, asset setup, and Active Admin release used by your application. The installation guide is the canonical starting point for adding the gem, running its installer, and handling generated configuration, database changes, seeds, assets, and the admin route. Use the instructions on that page rather than copying an old constraint or asset command from an example written for another release.

- Check the target release. Compare your app’s existing dependencies and asset pipeline with the release-specific installation instructions.
- Follow the installation guide. Add Active Admin as instructed, then run the documented installer and any required database or asset steps.
- Complete the generated setup. Review the generated configuration and seed instructions, then start the app and visit the admin route described by the guide.
- Register a model. Use the documented resource generator or registration procedure. The generated resource configuration is where you customize how that model is presented and managed.
Exact commands and generated files can differ by release and app configuration, so use the current guide for your target rather than assuming a command from another version will apply.
Shape the index around staff work
The index is the working list where staff scan records and choose what to do next. Begin with their actual task: reviewing a queue, checking a record’s status, finding a specific customer, or browsing content. Choose a renderer and fields that make that task easier, then add filtering and navigation controls as needed. Active Admin’s index customization documentation describes the available patterns; because this page is on the legacy documentation domain, verify syntax against the current documentation for your installed release.

Choose a renderer for the scan pattern

For a review queue, a table with a small set of decision-making fields may be easiest to scan. For editorial content, a preview-oriented layout may be more natural. Keep the default table if it serves the task; changing the renderer is not a goal in itself.
Add filters and named subsets
Filters let staff search or narrow records by relevant attributes. Scopes provide named subsets, such as “Pending” or “Archived,” when people repeatedly work through the same categories. Prefer a small set of meaningful controls over exposing every model attribute: the point is to make a common task faster to locate, not to reproduce the database schema on screen.

Set pagination for the collection
Choose a page size that keeps the list usable for staff and the application. For very large databases, the index documentation discusses disabling total-count queries; weigh the cost of count queries against whether staff need an exact total on each page. Do not treat a large page size as a substitute for useful filters.
Expose actions and supporting context
Use action items, sidebars, and download links where they support a real administrative task—for example, starting a common workflow or exporting the currently useful data. Confirm what a control acts on and whether it is available to the right users; a convenient link should not imply authorization that the application has not configured.

Customize forms, record views, and actions
The index is only one part of an admin workflow. Use the resource configuration and the relevant feature documentation to tailor each screen to what staff must do:
- Forms: present the fields needed to create or edit a record, in an order that reflects the task.
- Show pages: arrange details so staff can review a record without hunting through unrelated attributes.
- Custom controller actions: add a workflow operation that is not adequately represented by ordinary record editing.
- Batch actions: support an operation on selected records when it is appropriate to process them together.
- Sidebars: surface supporting information or controls alongside the main view.
Active Admin’s documentation index links to the corresponding resource, form, show, action, and authorization topics. Implement controls around staff responsibilities, and make destructive or consequential operations clear rather than hiding their effects behind a generic action label.

Configure authentication and authorization deliberately
Authentication answers who can sign in; authorization answers which actions and records that person may access. Active Admin describes bundled Devise configuration and authorization hooks, but installing the interface alone does not establish the correct access policy for every application. Decide who needs admin access, what each role may do, and how access to sensitive records is restricted; then configure and verify those rules in the app.
The project repository identifies Devise and authorization integrations in the project ecosystem, while the documentation index points to authorization guidance. Test access with accounts representing the roles your application actually uses, including attempts to reach records or actions those roles should not control.
Check release-specific changes before upgrading
Active Admin’s installation and upgrade guidance is distinct from the legacy index reference, so check the docs for the release you are targeting before upgrading or copying customized templates. The project’s upgrade guide currently describes v4 beta migration notes. It says that v4 uses Tailwind CSS v4 and assumes cssbundling-rails and importmap-rails are already installed and configured. It also identifies breaking changes affecting templates, index components, and batch-action forms, and notes that has-many sortable functionality is unavailable in that release.
Those details are specific to the v4 beta guidance, not universal instructions for every Active Admin release. Check the guide again when planning a migration, and account for your app’s asset setup and any copied templates or customizations before applying its steps.
