“Wolfram API” can mean two different things: querying Wolfram|Alpha for an answer, or deploying your own Wolfram Language function as a web API. Use WolframAlpha["query"] for the first; use APIFunction and CloudDeploy for the second. The right route depends on whether you want Wolfram to answer a query or want to expose your own computation to other software.

Choose the API path that matches your goal

Question Wolfram|Alpha query Custom Wolfram Cloud API
What does it do? Sends a query to Wolfram|Alpha and imports its result into Wolfram Language. Runs your Wolfram Language code through a web-accessible API you deploy.
What do you send? Free-form query text. Named parameters with specified types.
What do you receive? Results in supported forms such as formatted output, images, Wolfram Language expressions, short answers, spoken results, XML, or selected pods. A response in the format configured for your API, such as JSON or PNG.
How is access handled? The function requires internet connectivity to reach Wolfram|Alpha. The deployment can be private or public; callers may need authentication depending on the deployment and workflow.
How are calls accounted for? The cited function reference describes the integration; it does not establish Cloud Credit rates or quotas for this path. Wolfram documentation says API execution consumes Wolfram Cloud Credits. Current rates and limits are not stated in the cited pages.

For details, see Wolfram’s Wolfram|Alpha Integration guide and Cloud Functions & Deployment guide.

Query Wolfram|Alpha from Wolfram Language

Use this option when you have a question for Wolfram|Alpha’s computational knowledge engine and want to use its answer in a Wolfram Language workflow. The basic form is WolframAlpha["query"]. For example, you can provide a natural-language or mathematical query as the string. The call needs an internet connection.

Choose the output to suit what happens next: formatted output or images for display, a short answer for a concise result, XML or Wolfram Language expressions for processing, or spoken output when audio is useful. The function reference also documents pod selection and data access; these options let you work with particular parts of a result rather than treating every response as one undifferentiated answer. See the WolframAlpha function reference for supported forms and options.

Build and deploy your own Wolfram Cloud API

Choose a custom API when the computation should be your Wolfram Language code—not a query sent to Wolfram|Alpha—and another application needs to call it. The core pattern is to define an APIFunction with parameter specifications and code, then publish it with CloudDeploy. Wolfram’s walkthroughs are Create an Instant API and Deploy a Web API.

  1. Specify inputs. Give each parameter a name and an appropriate type. Wolfram Cloud Interpreter types include countries, currencies, colors, dates, and email addresses.
  2. Write and exercise the function. Implement the computation that uses those parameters, and check its behavior before deployment.
  3. Select the response format. Choose a format appropriate to the caller—for example, JSON for structured data or PNG for an image response.
  4. Deploy with deliberate permissions. Use CloudDeploy and set whether the API is private or public. Public access is not automatic or appropriate for every API.
  5. Call it from the client. Pass values using the API’s named parameters, then handle the response in the calling application.
  6. Review credit use. Wolfram’s documentation says calls to deployed APIs consume Wolfram Cloud Credits from the account. The cited pages do not state current per-call rates, quotas, or total cost, so check the applicable account terms before relying on a particular budget.

Call a deployed Wolfram API from Python

Wolfram documents a Python workflow using the Wolfram Client Library for Python and an authenticated cloud session. The client passes inputs as named parameters and retrieves the API response in Python. This is distinct from making a public, unauthenticated browser request: follow the authentication model appropriate to the deployment and client. The official procedure is in Call a Wolfram API from Python.

Which route should you use?

  • Use WolframAlpha when your input is a question and Wolfram|Alpha should supply the computational or knowledge result.
  • Use APIFunction with CloudDeploy when you need to make your own Wolfram Language computation callable over the web.
  • For client-side integration, decide early whether the consumer needs human-readable output, structured data, an image, or another supported response form.
  • For custom APIs, plan access permissions and Cloud Credit use along with the implementation; the cited documentation does not provide current rates or quotas.
