Incus and PGSTY SILO can both be part of an S3 object-storage learning path, but they play different roles. Incus provides storage buckets through its own documented backends; SILO is a separately operated S3-compatible server. The documentation reviewed does not establish SILO as an Incus storage driver or document a native Incus-managed SILO integration.
How do Incus storage pools, volumes, and buckets differ?
Incus has three storage concepts worth separating before choosing a setup. A storage pool is the backing storage managed by Incus. It holds storage volumes used for items such as images and instances. A storage bucket, by contrast, exposes object storage through the S3 protocol. An application connects to a bucket using its URL and access credentials; the bucket is not attached to an instance like a custom storage volume.
Incus documents local bucket backends using dir, btrfs, lvm, or zfs, as well as a cephobject driver. See the Incus storage bucket documentation for the available options and configuration details.
How do I use S3 storage with Incus?
Choose an Incus bucket backend, create and configure a bucket through Incus, then give the application the bucket endpoint and credentials it needs to make S3 API requests. The application communicates with the object-storage endpoint; it does not consume the bucket as a mounted disk.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a local backend, the bucket resides on the Incus member that stores it. For highly available object storage across cluster members, Incus points to Ceph Object. Ceph is an independent cluster that must be set up separately; it is not a SILO deployment. The relevant setup and backend details are in the Incus bucket guide and the Incus storage driver reference.
Can Incus use MinIO or SILO?
The reviewed Incus documentation does not list SILO as a storage driver, and it does not document native Incus management of a SILO service. Treat SILO as a separate S3-compatible endpoint: an application may use it if that application lets you configure an S3 endpoint and credentials. That is different from Incus provisioning or managing SILO.

SILO is a community-maintained MinIO fork. Its project documentation explicitly says it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by MinIO, Inc. The project’s identity and installation information are available in the PGSTY SILO documentation.
Are Incus storage buckets replicated across a cluster?
Incus local buckets are not replicated across cluster members. A local bucket belongs to one member, and its S3 API is available through that member; Incus can forward operations to the member that stores the bucket. For object storage intended to be highly available across members, Incus identifies Ceph Object as the option whose S3 API is available through any cluster member. These behaviors are described in the Incus bucket documentation.
How do I deploy distributed object storage with SILO?
SILO documents three topology types. Pick based on which failures the design needs to tolerate, not on the assumption that installing the server automatically provides redundancy.

| Topology | What it means | Documented use or boundary |
|---|---|---|
| SNSD: single node, single drive | One server with one drive; no data redundancy. | Local development and evaluation. |
| SNMD: single node, multiple drives | One server with multiple drives; drive-level failure tolerance, but no node-failure tolerance. | A constrained topology, not protection against losing the node. |
| MNMD: multiple nodes, multiple drives | Multiple servers and drives, with erasure-code redundancy across node and disk failure domains. | The distributed topology intended to provide redundancy across those failure domains. |
These are SILO’s documented topology descriptions, not published performance or availability guarantees. For architecture and deployment guidance, consult the SILO installation documentation.
Choose a deployment method
SILO’s installation materials describe containers, Kubernetes, native packages, standalone binaries, and Ansible-based deployment paths. Its container quickstart covers single-node, single-drive and single-node, multi-drive development or evaluation deployments. It does not define a production multi-node topology or an upgrade contract for container orchestrators. Use a documented, tested workflow for production and validate networking and failure domains in the environment where it will run.

- Keep independent backups and test restoration. Redundancy within a storage topology is not a substitute for a tested recovery plan.
- Validate upgrades, networking, and the effect of losing a drive or node before depending on the service.
SILO documentation says its in-place self-update is disabled. Its materials also describe MinIO Kubernetes Operator version 7.1.1 as a frozen compatibility baseline; verify that baseline against your Kubernetes distribution rather than assuming ongoing upstream maintenance. Which option fits: Incus local buckets, Ceph Object, or SILO?
| Option | What it provides | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Incus local bucket | S3-protocol bucket backed by a documented local driver such as dir, btrfs, lvm, or zfs. |
Integrated with Incus, but in a cluster the bucket is tied to one member and is not replicated. |
| Incus Ceph Object bucket | Incus bucket backed by Ceph Object; the S3 API is available through any cluster member. | Requires a separately set-up Ceph cluster; it is not SILO. |
| Separately operated SILO service | An S3-compatible object-storage service with documented single-node and distributed topologies. | Requires separate deployment, security, backup, recovery, and failure-domain planning; native Incus management is not documented. |
Choose an Incus local bucket when member-level placement and its availability limits suit the workload. Choose Ceph Object when the goal is highly available object storage across Incus cluster members and you are prepared to operate Ceph separately. Choose SILO when you want a distinct S3-compatible service and can manage its deployment and operational boundaries independently. The official documentation does not establish comparative performance, capacity thresholds, or cost rankings among these choices.
