Choose Stack Overflow for a focused programming answer, GitHub for code collaboration, freeCodeCamp for curriculum-based learning, publishing platforms for writing, Hacker News for technology discussion, or Indie Hackers for founder experience. The list comes from Vipin Agarwal’s DZone article published July 21, 2021; its “top 10” label is editorial rather than a measured ranking.
How to choose among the 10 communities
Start with the outcome you want. The services in the 2021 article cover question-and-answer, code collaboration, learner support, publishing, news discussion and founder conversation.

Focused technical questions and code collaboration
1. Stack Overflow
Stack Overflow is the clearest choice when you have one reproducible programming question and want answers that can be evaluated by other developers. Its official FAQ describes a focused question-and-answer service for professional and enthusiast programmers, not a general discussion forum. Include the relevant code, error message, expected result and what you already tried; broad requests for conversation are a poor fit.
2. GitHub
GitHub serves a different purpose from a conventional forum: repositories support code collaboration, issue tracking and project work. The 2021 article also points readers toward project sharing and discussion. GitHub’s official Community area describes Discussions as support for users’ educational journey, so use Discussions when you need help understanding GitHub or want community conversation, and use repository tools when the conversation belongs to a specific codebase.

Learning and peer support
3. freeCodeCamp
freeCodeCamp combines free learning resources with a community forum. The live forum currently exposes categories for curriculum help, project feedback, career support, programming questions and broader community conversation. That makes it useful when you need a learning sequence, feedback on a portfolio project or advice while changing careers. Post enough context for learners to reproduce the issue, and search the relevant curriculum category before opening a new topic.
Publishing platforms for developer writing
4. HackerNoon
The 2021 article characterizes HackerNoon as a place to read and publish technology writing. It is most relevant when your goal is to explain a tool, document an engineering lesson or reach readers beyond a single support question. Treat an article as durable documentation: state versions, assumptions and limitations instead of presenting an unqualified fix.

5. Hashnode
Hashnode is presented in the source as a developer publishing community. Choose it when you want to maintain a technical blog and participate in discussion around posts. A tutorial with a working example, setup instructions and tested scope will help readers more than a short announcement.
6. DEV Community
DEV Community is another writing-oriented developer network in the 2021 list. It suits build logs, practical tutorials, career lessons and questions that benefit from comments rather than a single accepted answer. Make the headline and opening paragraphs specific enough that readers can tell whether the post matches their stack.

7. Medium
Medium is included as a broad publishing platform for technology and developer articles. It can fit reflective engineering essays, explainers and cross-disciplinary writing. Because it is not limited to programming support, identify the intended technical audience and link concepts to concrete examples inside the article.
Technology news and programming discussion
8. Hacker News
Hacker News is described as a place to submit links, comment and discuss technology. It is a better match for following industry developments or debating the implications of a project than for debugging a private application. Submit material that offers technical or industry interest, then support your comments with evidence and address the argument rather than the person.

The source characterizes CodeProject as a programming-article and discussion community. That makes it relevant for explanatory code articles and exchanges around implementation techniques. The material available for this list does not independently establish its current activity or availability, so check the site’s recent posts and participation rules before relying on it as your primary community.

10. Indie Hackers
Indie Hackers is presented as a community where startup founders share stories and experience. Its focus is entrepreneurial rather than general coding help: product validation, distribution, revenue experiments and the realities of building a business. Developers turning a side project into a product may find more relevant peers there than in a language-specific Q&A site.

What the 2021 list does—and does not—prove
The article’s “top 10” wording does not come with a scoring method, comparable traffic measurement or a transparent ranking process. DZone repeats audience and membership figures, but their original publishers and measurement dates are not clear enough to treat them as current statistics. The list should therefore be read as a menu of participation types, not a 2026 league table.
Activity, moderation and etiquette can change. Before joining, open each service, look at recent discussions, read its participation rules and decide whether its current audience matches your goal. The official descriptions confirm the present-day nature of Stack Overflow’s focused Q&A, GitHub Community Discussions and the categories visible in the freeCodeCamp forum; equivalent current status for every other entry is not established here.
