MinIO announced AIStor Table Sharing on March 3, 2026. It adds the Delta Sharing protocol to AIStor so Databricks can read supported Delta and Iceberg tables where they are stored, including in an on-premises or private-cloud deployment. The interface is read-only: Databricks does not use the share to write back to the source tables.

What AIStor Table Sharing changes

MinIO says AIStor “natively integrates Delta Sharing open protocol.” Instead of setting up a separate sharing server for this workflow, an administrator can expose supported tables in AIStor through Delta Sharing and configure Databricks as a recipient. MinIO presents this as a way to avoid copying data to another location just to share it. That describes the intended architecture, not a guarantee that queries involve no data transfer or a measured performance improvement.

Table Sharing does not replace the process for creating and managing the underlying tables. Administrators continue to manage table data through standard S3 protocols or compatible libraries. The sharing interface provides read access to that stored data.

Table Sharing and AIStor Tables are different features

AIStor Tables provides Iceberg catalog APIs and semantics. Table Sharing exposes tables using the Delta Sharing protocol. MinIO describes sharing Delta and Iceberg-formatted tables through Delta Universal Format (UniForm) functionality. They are complementary capabilities, not interchangeable names for the same feature.

What to prepare before connecting Databricks

Network and certificate configuration can determine whether a generated profile works at all. Prepare these items before creating recipient credentials:

  • An externally reachable endpoint: Configure the Delta Sharing endpoint with a hostname Databricks can reach before creating tokens. The endpoint is included in the generated profile and in presigned URLs for data files. If you create a profile first, it may contain an internal or otherwise unreachable address.
  • TLS trusted by the client: Databricks must trust the certificate authority that signed the certificate presented by the AIStor endpoint. Confirm this from the client’s network environment, not only from an administrator’s workstation.
  • Compacted tables: MinIO recommends compacting shared tables so clients receive accurate table statistics.
  • A supported table and client combination: The source must be a supported table in AIStor, and the consuming engine must support Delta Sharing and the relevant table format.

If traffic passes through a proxy or load balancer

MinIO says a reverse proxy or load balancer in front of AIStor must stream responses and use a hostname that matches the configured sharing endpoint. Check both the hostname and response behavior along the route Databricks will use; an endpoint that resolves only inside the storage network is not sufficient for an external recipient.

Set up the share and connect Databricks

The MinIO guide’s workflow assumes that a Delta or Iceberg (UniForm) table already exists in an AIStor bucket. The exact Databricks interface labels and resource limits can change, so use the current Databricks documentation for its provider and catalog screens.

  1. Configure and verify the endpoint. Set the externally reachable Delta Sharing hostname and ensure TLS is valid and trusted by the intended Databricks client.
  2. Create a share in AIStor. Select the supported table data to make available and ensure the administrator’s policies permit share administration and access to the relevant table paths.
  3. Create an access token. AIStor generates a profile.share JSON profile containing the endpoint and bearer token. Treat the file as a credential, not as a harmless connection setting.
  4. Transfer the profile securely. MinIO says it does not distribute the profile to the recipient. Deliver it to the Databricks administrator or recipient through an approved secure channel.
  5. Configure the recipient in Databricks. Use the profile to create a provider, then create a catalog from the shared data and query the available tables. Follow Databricks’ current instructions for the workspace and client in use.
  6. Validate access and query behavior. Confirm that the recipient can see and read the intended tables. If results appear capped, check client-side limits before attributing the behavior to AIStor.

Access control and security behavior

MinIO’s access-control documentation describes policies for administering shares and governing table paths. When a consumer requests table files, AIStor returns presigned URLs signed with a short-lived credential scoped to the table. This is part of the read path; it does not grant the consumer write access to the source table.

MinIO documents that removing a token or share invalidates affected tokens across nodes in the deployment. Even so, protect the profile while it is in use: it contains a bearer token and should be transferred and stored accordingly. Apply the organization’s normal credential-handling and access-review practices.

Choose the right format, route, and client

The main decision is whether to query data where it already resides or maintain a separate cloud copy for analytics. Table Sharing is relevant when the source should remain in AIStor and the network path and recipient support direct access. Copying data may still suit architectures that require cloud-local storage, but the MinIO materials do not establish a universal performance or cost winner between the approaches.

Choice What the documentation establishes What to verify
Delta or Iceberg (UniForm) MinIO’s guide describes sharing Delta and Iceberg (UniForm) tables through Delta Sharing. Confirm the table is supported and the selected client supports that protocol and format combination.
Direct endpoint or proxy/load balancer A recipient needs an externally reachable configured endpoint. A proxy or load balancer must stream responses and use a matching hostname. Test DNS, routing, TLS trust, hostname matching, and streamed responses from the Databricks network path.
Databricks or another compatible client MinIO names Databricks and also documents clients including Spark, Trino/Presto, and Power BI; its product materials list Spark, Pandas, DuckDB, BI tools, and other compatible engines. Limits and troubleshooting

A profile points to an unreachable host

Check whether the endpoint was configured before the token and profile were created. Because the profile and presigned data-file URLs can embed the endpoint, correcting network access alone may not fix a profile generated with the wrong hostname; create credentials after the endpoint is correct.

TLS validation fails

Check that the certificate matches the configured hostname and that the Databricks client trusts its issuing certificate authority. A certificate trusted on an administrator’s machine may not be trusted in the recipient’s environment.

Queries return fewer rows than expected

MinIO’s guide notes that the one-million-row cap encountered by some queries is a Databricks client limit, not an AIStor limit. Check the client’s current limits and query behavior before diagnosing a storage-side restriction.

Table statistics or query planning look wrong

MinIO recommends compacting shared tables to provide accurate table statistics. Confirm table maintenance as part of diagnosing query planning or unexpected statistics.

When this approach fits

  • Use Table Sharing when supported tables need to remain in AIStor and Databricks can reach the configured endpoint securely.
  • Account for network connectivity, TLS trust, table compaction, recipient credential delivery, and the read-only nature of the share in the operational design.
  • Consider another compatible client where it better fits the workload, but verify support for both Delta Sharing and the actual table format.

MinIO’s documentation lists minimum component release versions, but those requirements can change. Confirm the current AIStor and Databricks prerequisites in their official documentation before deployment.
