What is BYTE 90?
BYTE 90 is a small collectible made by ALXV Labs, styled like a beige vintage computer. It is designed to sit on a desk and provide interactive animations—not to replace a laptop, desktop, or programmable computer. Independent coverage of the original describes a 3D-printed enclosure, a 1.5-inch, 128 × 128 color OLED, an ESP32-S3 development board, and an accelerometer. It has no keyboard; movement and taps are the main controls. Hackster.io’s 2025 coverage also reports a bottom button for communication mode and sleep.
The details differ by edition. The original and Series 2 AI Edition are not simply the same device with different software: ALXV Labs lists a distinct custom board and additional audio and haptic components for Series 2. The maker’s Series 2 page is the primary source for those newer specifications.
What can you do with the original BYTE 90?
The original’s interaction is deliberately simple: pick it up, move it, or tap it to trigger animations on its screen. Seeed Studio described the original as offering over 30 motion-triggered animations and synchronization between units using ESP-Now. Those are descriptions of the original version, not a feature count or stock statement for Series 2. Seeed’s 2025 post said the original launch run was limited to 50 units; that historical quantity does not indicate current availability.

What does Series 2 AI Edition add?
ALXV Labs lists the Series 2 AI Edition with an ESP32-S3R8 custom board, 8 MB PSRAM, 8 MB flash, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, a 128 × 128 OLED, and an ADXL345 accelerometer. The maker also lists a DRV2605 haptic motor, PCF8563 real-time clock, and audio capture and playback components. These are maker-stated specifications, not independent performance or battery tests.
The AI Edition can still be used as an ordinary interactive toy offline, according to the maker; Wi-Fi is needed for its AI functions. The Series 2 page describes setup through Xiaozhi and a separate OpenAI firmware path using OpenAI’s Realtime API. OpenAI usage is described as pay-per-use, so do not assume AI service access is included at a fixed ongoing price.

ALXV Labs describes an optional 1200 mAh rechargeable battery and up to two days of battery life for Series 2. That runtime is a maker-listed figure, not a verified duration under a specified usage pattern.

What to check before buying BYTE 90
Confirm the edition and features
Check that the listing names the edition you want. The original is the motion-animation collectible; Series 2 AI Edition is the version with the maker-listed audio hardware, haptics, clock, and AI connectivity options. Do not assume accessories or specifications are shared across versions.

Verify live price, stock, and shipping
ALXV Labs listed Series 2 AI Edition at CAD $98 and marked it sold out when its page was checked in 2026. Price and availability can change, so use the current maker listing rather than treating that figure or status as current. The maker warns that international orders may be shipped without a battery because of cross-border hazardous-material restrictions, and that import duties or taxes may apply. Check the shipping terms for your destination before ordering.
Check battery details if replacement or inclusion matters
For Series 2, the maker identifies a 1200 mAh, 3.7 V battery, size 103040, with a PH 2.0 connector, and cautions buyers to check polarity. A replacement must match the exact device’s size, voltage, connector, and polarity. The available information does not establish that the original uses the same battery specification.

Set expectations about what it is for
BYTE 90 is suited to someone who wants a tactile, screen-based desk collectible with playful interactions. It is not a productivity machine or a substitute for a conventional computer. If AI features are the reason for choosing Series 2, confirm the current firmware setup and usage terms on the maker’s page; if you only want the ordinary toy interaction, the maker says that use does not require Wi-Fi.
