Ubuntu is a free, Debian-based Linux distribution created under Mark Shuttleworth’s leadership and first released in October 2004. Canonical, the company founded around the project, maintains Ubuntu on a predictable release schedule and earns revenue from commercial support, management products and services. As of October 2026, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS remains within its stated standard security-maintenance period, which runs through 31 May 2029.

How Ubuntu began

A Debian-based desktop project

Canonical’s official project history says Mark Shuttleworth brought together Debian developers to create an easy-to-use Linux desktop and founded Canonical around that effort. The first official release, Ubuntu 4.10 “Warty Warthog,” launched in October 2004 and drew a large free-software community.

A predictable release rhythm

Ubuntu’s six-month cadence began with that first release. Canonical later made every fourth release a long-term-support (LTS) release, issued every two years in April. The regular schedule gives users and organizations known milestones for evaluating upgrades.

How Ubuntu releases and support work

Ubuntu publishes interim releases between LTS milestones. The practical difference is the support horizon: LTS versions are intended to provide a longer-maintained base, while the schedule documentation establishes the cadence but does not state an interim release’s support period.

Release type or coverage Schedule or support horizon What it means
Interim release Part of the six-month release cadence; its support period is not stated in Canonical’s release-schedule documentation. A newer release between LTS milestones. Check the specific version’s lifecycle before adopting it for a long-lived system.
LTS release Every two years in April; Ubuntu 24.04 LTS has five years of standard security maintenance, through 31 May 2029. A longer-maintained release suited to users who prioritize a stable base over moving to every interim version.
Ubuntu 24.04 expanded coverage Canonical’s lifecycle table lists coverage through May 2034. Extended coverage beyond standard maintenance, documented as Ubuntu Pro coverage.
Ubuntu 24.04 legacy add-on Canonical’s lifecycle table lists an add-on option through May 2039. A further lifecycle option; the table identifies it as an add-on rather than standard maintenance.

Is Ubuntu 24.04 LTS still supported?

Standard security maintenance

Yes. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, codenamed “Noble Numbat,” was released on 25 April 2024. Canonical’s release notes specify five years of security maintenance, ending 31 May 2029. The release ships with the Linux 6.8 kernel.

Coverage beyond the standard period

Canonical’s lifecycle table lists expanded Ubuntu Pro coverage for 24.04 through May 2034 and a legacy add-on option through May 2039. These are distinct from the standard five-year maintenance period; organizations should consult Canonical’s lifecycle terms to determine what coverage applies to their systems.

What Ubuntu is used for today

Desktop, server and cloud

Canonical presents Ubuntu 24.04 LTS for desktop, server, cloud and developer use. Its release announcement also describes an engineering relationship with Microsoft Azure and a Rust toolchain designed to make newer Rust versions available across the LTS lifecycle. These examples show the distribution’s role beyond a personal computer.

Developer and data-science workflows

Canonical lists integrations and tooling for data science, including OpenCV, TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch and Kubeflow. Ubuntu 24.04.1, a point release focused on stability, added a new App Center and a dedicated firmware-updater application.

What is a reasonable forecast for Ubuntu?

The strongest evidence for Ubuntu’s future is its established structure: Canonical’s documentation commits to a release every six months and an April LTS milestone every two years. Canonical has also stated that it remains committed to dependable Ubuntu kernel support despite changes in upstream Linux LTS support. That supports an expectation of continued kernel maintenance aligned with Ubuntu’s enterprise lifecycle, not a promise about a particular future kernel version.

The documented product direction spans desktops, servers, cloud platforms, Ubuntu Core and edge devices, alongside developer and data-science tooling. Those present commitments make continued incremental work across platform support, kernels, cloud and developer tools a reasonable expectation. Canonical’s published materials cited here do not establish a detailed roadmap beyond 26.04, so specific unannounced features should not be treated as confirmed.
