SUSE Linux Enterprise Server supports 64-bit Arm (AArch64): its SLES 16.0 release notes list Armv8 (AArch64) as a supported architecture. That current support follows an earlier SUSE initiative to expand partner access to SLES 12 for developing and testing AArch64 server products. Support for the architecture does not, by itself, certify every Arm server or workload.
What SUSE announced about 64-bit ARM servers
SUSE’s historical announcement expanded its partner program to give participating companies access to an AArch64 version of SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 for developing, testing and delivering products based on 64-bit ARM processors. SUSE framed the program as a way to build supported enterprise solutions across different hardware platforms and give customers more choice.
The announcement also said SUSE had added ARM and AArch64 support to the openSUSE Build Service. The stated aim was to let community developers build packages against real 64-bit ARM hardware and SLES 12 binaries, improving package development, testing and compatibility.
Companies named in the announcement
SUSE named AMD, AppliedMicro and Cavium as processor vendors, and Dell, E4 Computer Engineering, HP and SoftIron as server manufacturers. This is the partner list from that announcement; it does not establish that those companies currently sell or certify compatible systems.

Workloads SUSE had in mind
The announcement identified possible target areas including web-scale workloads, rapid cloud build-out, purpose-built security, medical and network appliances, hyperscale computing, distributed storage, and software-defined or conventional networking. These were proposed application areas, not published performance results.
What current SUSE support means
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 16.0 release notes published September 16, 2026 list Armv8 (AArch64) as a supported architecture. The same notes give architecture-level configuration limits of 768 maximum logical CPUs and 256 TiB theoretical RAM for AArch64; certified RAM is listed as “n.a.” These figures are not certification of any particular server.

Architecture support is not a blanket assurance that every Arm machine, optional kernel or workload has identical support. For example, SUSE’s SLES 15 SP7 Arm-specific notes describe SoC enablement and known limitations. They say the 64 KiB kernel flavor is supported on select platforms, while KVM virtualization with that flavor remains a technology preview. Check the notes for the exact SLES release and platform, along with SUSE hardware compatibility information, before deployment.
Support lifecycle and subscription considerations
SLES 16.0’s release notes state that the release is fully maintained and supported through July 31, 2034. They describe optional Long Term Service Pack Support in 12-month increments, for 12 to 36 additional months, potentially extending support through December 2037. SUSE says an appropriate subscription is required for support. Confirm current lifecycle and subscription terms with SUSE before procurement.

What the announcement does—and does not—show
The launch was a platform-strategy move: SUSE was extending enterprise Linux development and partner access to AArch64 as server vendors explored Arm-based systems. Matt Eastwood, then IDC senior vice president for Enterprise Infrastructure and Datacenter, described interest in ARM servers as growing and adoption as early and tied to specific use cases. That was a qualitative comment in the historical announcement, not a current market statistic.
The announcement and current release notes do not establish a market-share figure, a comparative performance benchmark, current availability or pricing for the named hardware, or present-day certification of those historical OEMs. A deployment decision should instead be based on the exact server and SoC, platform enablement, kernel and virtualization requirements, current hardware availability, and the applicable SUSE support terms.
