aurutils is a suite of command-line scripts that automates separate parts of working with the Arch User Repository (AUR), including searching, fetching, dependency handling, building, and managing packages in local pacman repositories. It is not a graphical package manager, and using it does not remove the need to review AUR build instructions and package sources.
What is aurutils?
aurutils is a collection of scripts for automating AUR tasks. Rather than combining every task into one command, it separates activities such as package searching, update checks, dependency computation, fetching, building, and repository management. The project’s overview describes this as keeping different tasks separate: aurutils project documentation.
That makes aurutils a command-line toolkit for Arch Linux users who want to automate parts of an AUR workflow. It is not a graphical package manager or a substitute for understanding how an AUR package is built.
How does aurutils handle AUR packages?
The documented workflow centers on building packages into local pacman repositories, rather than treating AUR packages as foreign packages installed directly with pacman -U. A local repository lets pacman manage packages through its normal repository workflow. The exact setup and commands are documented in the project’s README and aur(1) manual.

How do you install and learn aurutils?
The project README recommends the aurutils release package and identifies aurutils-git as the package for the master branch. Package availability and versions can change, so check the current package information before installing. The project documentation is provided as groff man pages; aur(1) is the overview manual and includes information about local repository setup.
- Review the current project README and its installation guidance.
- Install the package variant appropriate to your needs, checking its current availability and version.
- Read
man aurfor the command overview and repository setup details. - Read the individual command manuals, such as
man aur-buildorman aur-repo, before using those commands.
What should AUR users review before building?
Arch Linux does not support AUR helpers. ArchWiki advises users to become familiar with the manual build process so they can troubleshoot problems and vet package sources before installation: ArchWiki: AUR helpers.
aurutils can automate steps, but it cannot make an AUR package trustworthy by itself. Before building, understand the package’s build instructions and inspect the sources it uses. If a build fails, familiarity with the manual process helps you identify whether the problem lies in the package instructions, its dependencies, or your local setup.

aurutils is suited to Arch Linux users who prefer discrete command-line tools and a local repository workflow for building and managing AUR packages. If you are new to the AUR, first learn the manual build process and how to assess package sources; automation is most useful when you can recognize what it is doing and troubleshoot when a package breaks.
