Microsoft called it Windows 7 because the project followed Windows Vista, whose programmatic version number was 6.0. The number began as the project’s internal label; Microsoft kept it as the public name because it was simple and, in the company’s explanation, this was the seventh Windows release. It was not a guarantee that the finished operating system’s technical version number would be 7.0.
Where did the name Windows 7 come from?
Microsoft engineer Raymond Chen explained that the project was code-named Windows 7 after Vista’s programmatic version number, 6.0. Since the project came next, 7.0 seemed a natural label. Microsoft’s marketing team ultimately retained the project name for the product. Raymond Chen’s account
That origin connects the name to Vista’s version sequence, but it does not mean the name itself was a precise technical version declaration. Chen noted that the natural 7.0 label was not necessarily what ultimately shipped. “Windows 7” is best understood as the public product name, rooted in the project’s numbering logic.
Why did Microsoft keep the number instead of choosing a year or a new brand?
In a contemporaneous Windows 7 FAQ, Microsoft product executive Mike Nash described several naming styles the company had used: version numbers, calendar years, and aspirational names. Microsoft said a year-based name would be a poor fit because it did not release a new Windows every year. It also said that a wholly new aspirational name would not reflect a release built on Vista’s platform investments and intended to refine them.

The FAQ’s concise explanation was: “Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore ‘Windows 7’ just makes sense.” Microsoft’s Windows 7 FAQ
| Naming approach | Examples cited by Microsoft | Why it fit—or did not fit—Windows 7 |
|---|---|---|
| Version number | Windows 3.11 | A numbered name suited the release sequence and gave Microsoft a simple public label. |
| Calendar year | Windows 98 | Microsoft said a date did not make sense for a product that was not released annually. |
| Aspirational name | Windows XP; Windows Vista | Microsoft said an entirely new aspirational identity would not match a release that refined Vista’s platform rather than departing from it. |
Was Blackcomb the codename for Windows 7?
No. Chen described Blackcomb as an earlier, oversized wish-list project planned after Windows XP. Longhorn became the codename for the project that led to Windows Vista. After the original scope was discarded, Microsoft started a new project from scratch and code-named it Windows 7. Blackcomb therefore is not the accurate codename for the released Windows 7 project.
