Qualcomm should watch the expanding Windows-on-Arm field, but the evidence does not show that MediaTek has launched—or directly matched Qualcomm with—a standalone Copilot+ laptop chip. MediaTek’s original Windows laptop-chip plan was reported in 2024, not announced by the company. Its confirmed PC development is now a collaboration with NVIDIA on RTX Spark processors for Windows 11 PCs. That makes the competitive landscape broader, without proving a direct MediaTek challenge to Qualcomm’s Copilot+ laptops.

What is confirmed about MediaTek’s Windows PC plans?

The 2024 laptop-chip report was not a product announcement

On June 12, 2024, Reuters reported that MediaTek was designing an Arm-based chip for Microsoft’s AI laptops, citing three people familiar with the matter. The report said the chip was expected to launch in late 2025, after a Qualcomm exclusivity arrangement, as described by those sources. That was a reported plan and forecast—not a public MediaTek launch commitment or evidence that a chip shipped. Reuters via ThePrint, June 12, 2024

Digitimes separately reported on June 13, 2024, that the then-valid Microsoft–Qualcomm exclusivity arrangement had contributed to MediaTek keeping quiet about AI PC chip development. That, too, was industry reporting rather than official confirmation. Digitimes, June 13, 2024

The current official connection is MediaTek’s NVIDIA collaboration

On June 1, 2026, MediaTek announced its role in enabling NVIDIA RTX Spark, described as a new class of processors powering Windows 11 PCs. The announcement confirms a MediaTek–NVIDIA PC effort; it does not establish that MediaTek announced a separate, standalone laptop processor or a MediaTek-branded Copilot+ PC. MediaTek, June 1, 2026

Microsoft’s August 25, 2026, Windows Developer Blog described NVIDIA joining Qualcomm Snapdragon X in the Windows-on-Arm silicon family. The passage names those two players; it does not identify MediaTek as a standalone laptop-silicon vendor. That limits what the post confirms, but does not prove that no other MediaTek development exists. Microsoft Windows Developer Blog, August 25, 2026

How does MediaTek’s status compare with Qualcomm’s?

The distinction is between a reported plan, an announced partnership, and an established PC product. The documented evidence supports the following comparison:

Company or effort What is established What is not established here
MediaTek Windows laptop chip Reuters reported development and a late-2025 target in June 2024, based on unnamed sources. A public MediaTek launch commitment, a shipping laptop, an OEM configuration, or a price.
MediaTek and NVIDIA RTX Spark MediaTek announced collaboration on RTX Spark processors for Windows 11 PCs in June 2026. That this is a distinct MediaTek-only laptop chip or a Copilot+ PC product.
Qualcomm Snapdragon X Microsoft’s initial Copilot+ PC announcement centered on Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus. Microsoft later announced a 13-inch Surface Laptop with Snapdragon X Plus as a Copilot+ PC; Qualcomm also described continued work with Microsoft on Windows 11, Copilot+ PCs, and Windows AI Foundry. A quantified market-share lead, or a directly comparable performance or efficiency advantage over MediaTek.

Microsoft’s May 2024 launch post said Windows had “the best implementation of apps on the fastest chip, starting with Qualcomm.” That is Microsoft’s promotional characterization at launch, not an independent benchmark. The post also described native Arm64 apps and Prism emulation, but it is dated platform context—not a 2026 audit of compatibility for every app or peripheral. Microsoft, May 20, 2024

Does a Windows-on-Arm chip automatically qualify for Copilot+?

No. “Windows-on-Arm PC,” “Windows 11 PC,” and “Copilot+ PC” describe different things. Microsoft partner guidance refers to a 40 TOPS NPU baseline for Copilot+ PCs, but that criteria snapshot does not prove an unannounced MediaTek chip meets the requirements. Qualification and support for individual Copilot+ features should be checked against Microsoft’s current requirements when a specific chip and PC are announced. Microsoft Partner Center, Copilot+ PC guidance

Likewise, Arm support does not mean every application or peripheral works identically. Microsoft’s 2024 launch announcement named native Arm64 experiences, including Microsoft 365 apps, and Prism emulation. It does not establish universal compatibility or make emulated software equivalent to native execution in every workload.

Should Qualcomm worry?

Qualcomm should pay attention to the widening competitive field, but the available evidence does not demonstrate that MediaTek has displaced or directly matched it in Copilot+ laptops. Qualcomm has a documented role in the first Copilot+ PC announcement, a named Copilot+ Surface Laptop, and continued Microsoft collaboration. MediaTek has an official PC connection through its NVIDIA partnership, while Microsoft’s later Windows-on-Arm account names NVIDIA alongside Qualcomm.

The sources do not establish market share, like-for-like performance, battery life, pricing, or a financial impact on Qualcomm. Without a named MediaTek laptop configuration and comparable independent results, those would be speculation—not a measured threat.
