Prepare for cloud and big-data workloads by assessing what you run, what your existing data center can support, and how your teams will operate the target environment—before choosing infrastructure. Converged infrastructure, as described in a historical HP training guide, combines servers, storage, networking, and management in an integrated platform. That is a useful planning concept, not a current product recommendation or proof that integration alone will make workloads cheaper, faster, or more reliable.

What converged infrastructure means in this context

The HP Data Center Solutions Guide defines converged infrastructure as an integrated enterprise platform bringing together server, storage, networking, and management components. Its discussion connects infrastructure modernization with cloud adoption and big-data work. This is the guide’s vendor perspective; it does not independently establish that a converged platform produces particular cost, deployment, or performance outcomes.

The guide is historical vendor training material, marked revision 14.41. Treat its terminology and examples as context for planning, not as evidence that named HP products, compatibility, support, or capabilities remain current. Verify those details independently before making an architecture or procurement decision.

Start with workload and business requirements

Make workload discovery the first step. The guide groups use cases as hyperscale, mainstream, and business-critical. These are broad categories, not sizing prescriptions: determine the actual requirements of the applications in your environment rather than assigning a design based on a label alone.

  • Resource demand and scale: Document compute, storage, and network needs; typical and peak demand; growth expectations; and how demand changes over time.
  • Business criticality: Identify the consequences of downtime, data loss, or slow recovery, and the availability and recovery expectations for each workload.
  • Security and compliance: Record data sensitivity, access controls, regulatory obligations, and any constraints on where workloads or data may run.
  • Dependencies: Map application relationships, data flows, and dependencies on shared services. A workload may be difficult to move or scale independently if other systems rely on it.

These distinctions matter because workloads with different scale, security, availability, and management requirements may not fit the same design. Establish the requirements before comparing infrastructure approaches.

Build a current-state baseline before choosing a target

Inventory the existing estate and decide whether the plan is to reuse current infrastructure, buy new hardware, or combine the two. The guide’s method is to compare the current state with a desired end state across technology, architecture, management processes, and tools. Use that comparison to expose constraints and gaps rather than assuming that either reuse or replacement is the right answer.

Technology and architecture

Review servers, storage, networks, facilities, and applications together. Record utilization, capacity, interdependencies, lifecycle and support status, and relevant constraints. Consider how the components interact: a server with available capacity may still be unsuitable if storage, network, facility, or application dependencies prevent the workload from using it effectively.

Operations and management

Document the tools and processes used to provision, monitor, secure, and support services. Examine current automation, service-management responsibilities, and handoffs between teams. An integrated technical platform does not by itself settle who approves changes, responds to incidents, manages capacity, or owns service outcomes.

People, demand, and governance

Assess staff capability and organizational readiness, including who will operate the resulting environment and what skills or changes in responsibility may be needed. Establish how business demand is forecast, how capacity is planned and funded, who makes architecture and investment decisions, and how IT governance applies to the proposed services.

Choose the cloud design around the workloads

Decide whether the target is a private cloud or a hybrid arrangement that uses resources in more than one environment. The choice should follow workload and business requirements, not the assumption that one model suits everything. For each workload, consider its scaling pattern, security and compliance needs, availability expectations, dependencies, and management requirements.

When evaluating an integrated platform against reusing existing systems or another architecture, compare the same practical dimensions:

  • Workload fit and scaling: Can the design accommodate the workload’s demand pattern and expected growth?
  • Reuse versus new hardware: Which current systems can meet requirements, and what gaps require a new investment?
  • Cloud model: Does private or hybrid deployment fit the workload’s placement, control, and business needs?
  • Operations: What automation and management capabilities are needed, and what operating burden will remain with your teams?
  • Risk and lifecycle: How do security, availability, compliance, support, procurement constraints, and lifecycle costs affect the decision?

The available sources do not provide a current independent product comparison or a basis for ranking vendors. Evaluate specific systems against documented requirements, and validate current compatibility, support, capabilities, and costs directly.

  1. Document workloads: Classify applications by resource demand, scale, criticality, security, availability, and dependencies.
  2. Inventory the environment: Record server, storage, network, facility, application, and management assets, including utilization and constraints.
  3. Describe the operating model: Map provisioning, automation, monitoring, service management, ownership, staffing, and governance.
  4. Set the target: Define the cloud model and desired capabilities for each workload, along with business and operational requirements.
  5. Compare current and target states: Identify which existing capabilities can be retained, which gaps must be addressed, and what new investment or operating changes are needed.
  6. Validate proposed choices: Check current product support, compatibility, security, capacity, lifecycle costs, and procurement conditions before committing.

A readiness assessment is useful when it results in explicit gaps, owners, and decisions—not just an inventory or a preferred product. If workload requirements, operating responsibilities, or governance remain unclear, resolve those issues before treating an infrastructure design as ready for implementation.
