Isovalent launched on November 10, 2020, with Cilium Enterprise, a commercial cloud-native networking and security product built around the open-source Cilium project, and announced a $29 million Series A. Andreessen Horowitz and Google led the round, with Cisco Investments participating. Cisco completed its acquisition of Isovalent on April 12, 2024.

What Isovalent launched in 2020

The launch was an enterprise software and business-model announcement, not the release of a Linux distribution or a physical network appliance. Isovalent’s product, Cilium Enterprise, was built on Cilium, an open-source project for cloud-native networking. The company positioned the product to help enterprises connect, observe, and secure modern applications. Isovalent’s November 10, 2020 announcement and TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report describe the launch and its commercial offering.

Who funded Isovalent’s $29 million Series A?

Isovalent announced the $29 million Series A on November 10, 2020. Andreessen Horowitz and Google led the round, and Cisco Investments also participated. The figure refers specifically to that Series A, not to Isovalent’s total lifetime funding.

How Cilium and eBPF fit together

Cilium is a cloud-native networking project associated with Kubernetes environments. It uses eBPF, a Linux kernel technology, to implement networking and security functions close to workloads. That approach underpinned Isovalent’s launch-era focus on application connectivity, observability, and security.

NETGEAR 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Network Switch (GS305)
  • GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
  • PLUG-AND-PLAY UNMANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Simple plug-and-play setup with no software to install or configuration required.
  • FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
  • SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
  • REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only

In the funding announcement, Andreessen Horowitz partner and Isovalent board member Martin Casado described the vision as going “beyond IPs + ports” toward networking visibility and security aligned with how developers, operations, and security teams think about applications and data. That is an investor’s characterization published by the company, not an independent product assessment. The launch sources do not establish independently tested performance or security outcomes.

Cisco’s acquisition and Isovalent today

Cisco announced its intent to acquire Isovalent on December 21, 2023, describing Cilium, Tetragon, Cilium Mesh, and Isovalent Enterprise as part of its cloud-native networking and security portfolio. Cisco’s announcement set out the proposed acquisition.
