Yes, two NVIDIA GPUs can still be used for gaming in limited cases, but NVIDIA ended the broad, driver-managed SLI approach. Since January 1, 2021, new SLI driver profiles have not been added for RTX 20-series and earlier GPUs. The GeForce RTX 3090 and other SLI-capable GPUs rely on games implementing multi-GPU support themselves. For most players, one faster GPU is the simpler upgrade.
What changed when NVIDIA ended SLI profiles?
NVIDIA announced that it would stop adding new SLI driver profiles for RTX 20 Series and earlier GPUs starting January 1, 2021. A driver profile is a game-specific set of rules that helps the graphics driver distribute rendering work across multiple GPUs. Without a suitable profile or native game implementation, installing a second card does not automatically make a game use it.
The change was not an immediate shutdown of every older SLI setup. NVIDIA said existing SLI driver profiles would continue to be tested and maintained for SLI-ready RTX 20 Series and earlier cards. That describes NVIDIA’s policy at the time; it should not be read as a promise of ongoing maintenance through 2026.
Can you still use two NVIDIA GPUs for gaming?
Sometimes. The decisive question is whether the particular game supports multi-GPU rendering in a way that works with the cards, drivers, and rendering API in your system. The presence of two GPUs, an SLI-capable motherboard, or a bridge is not enough by itself.

- RTX 20-series and earlier SLI-ready cards: Older driver profiles may still serve games they were made for, but NVIDIA no longer adds new profiles for these GPUs under the policy effective January 1, 2021.
- RTX 3090 and future SLI-capable GeForce cards: NVIDIA’s support statement says SLI is supported only when the game implements it natively.
- Other multi-GPU uses: A system can have multiple GPUs for workloads that explicitly support them, but that does not establish that a given game will render across both.
There is no authoritative current count here of games with native multi-GPU rendering, so check the current documentation for the exact game rather than assuming support based on its age, engine, or API.
Does RTX 3090 SLI work in modern games?
Only if the game itself provides native multi-GPU support. NVIDIA singled out the GeForce RTX 3090 in its policy because it remained SLI-capable, but the driver no longer supplies the general game-profile route used in the older SLI era. The game developer must implement the multi-GPU behavior.

DirectX 12 and Vulkan give developers mechanisms to manage multiple GPUs within a game. That shifts responsibility to the game or engine developer: the feature must be implemented, tested, and supported in that title. A game using DirectX 12 or Vulkan does not necessarily use two GPUs.
Is an NVLink bridge enough to make dual GPUs work?
No. NVLink is a high-speed physical interconnect for compatible cards; it does not make a game multi-GPU-capable. NVIDIA’s 2018 RTX launch documentation described NVLink bandwidth of up to 100 GB/s for multi-GPU configurations. That is an advertised maximum for the interconnect, not a guarantee of game scaling or a measure of frame-rate improvement.

Think of the setup as two separate requirements:
- Hardware connection: Compatible cards and a suitable bridge or interconnect allow the hardware to communicate.
- Software support: The game must have a driver profile that applies to the older SLI path or implement native multi-GPU rendering itself.
Meeting the first requirement does not satisfy the second. Check the exact cards’ and motherboard’s compatibility requirements, as well as the game’s current support information, before buying a bridge or second GPU.
Should you buy one faster GPU instead of two older cards?
For a gaming upgrade, a single modern GPU is usually the lower-friction choice. A second older card is worthwhile only if the games you actually play can use both effectively and the complete system makes sense for your budget and power, cooling, and maintenance constraints.

NVIDIA claimed at the September 1, 2020 RTX 30-series launch that its real-time ray tracing performance was up to 2x that of the prior Turing generation. That is a vendor claim about RTX 30-series performance, not a direct benchmark against any particular SLI pair. NVIDIA later reported more than 130 games and applications supporting RTX acceleration technologies in 2021; RTX acceleration support is not the same as native multi-GPU rendering.
Before spending money, compare the exact games you play, whether their current documentation confirms multi-GPU rendering, the total cost of a compatible setup, and the power and cooling demands. If a title does not use both GPUs, the second card may add cost and heat without a gaming benefit.

Why did NVIDIA stop adding SLI profiles?
NVIDIA pointed to the shift toward DirectX 12 and Vulkan, which let developers implement multi-GPU support within games and use their own code to control performance. Under that model, NVIDIA’s driver-profile team is no longer responsible for adding broad game-by-game SLI profiles; developers must choose to build and maintain native support.
