DCIM stands for Data Center Infrastructure Management. It describes the coordinated monitoring and management of a data center’s IT equipment and the facility systems that support it, including power and cooling. The aim is to connect information about those systems so teams can manage operations, energy, capacity, maintenance and alarms with a more complete view.
What does DCIM mean?
DCIM is both a management discipline and a category of software used to help data center teams understand and manage connected IT and facility infrastructure. Its defining idea is integration: servers and other IT equipment depend on facility systems such as power and cooling, so information about both can be more useful when viewed together.
The International Telecommunication Union’s Recommendation ITU-T L.1305, listed as in force and approved on November 13, 2019, describes DCIM systems in terms of data collection and operational functions. Schneider Electric’s FAQ, last modified May 27, 2025, likewise expands DCIM as Data Center Infrastructure Management and describes software for monitoring, measuring and managing IT equipment and supporting power and cooling systems: Schneider Electric’s DCIM FAQ.
What can DCIM cover?
DCIM can bring together information and operational functions across several areas. The exact scope varies by system and deployment; the term does not guarantee that every product covers every function.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Assets and infrastructure: Representing IT equipment and supporting facility components together for operational visibility.
- Power and energy: Monitoring or managing power use and supporting energy-saving efforts.
- Cooling and environmental conditions: Providing visibility into supporting systems and, depending on the deployment, relevant environmental conditions.
- Capacity: Supporting capacity management for both ICT equipment and facility infrastructure, such as assessing how much usable capacity remains.
- Maintenance and alarms: Supporting maintenance processes and alerts. L.1305 also considers early alarms and protection based on big-data analysis.
- Data collection and integration: Gathering information from equipment and systems across IT and facilities, where available interfaces and protocols permit it.
These areas reflect the scope described in ITU-T L.1305; they are not a universal feature checklist.
How does DCIM connect IT and facilities?
IT and facilities teams may manage different parts of the same environment. IT staff focus on computing equipment, while facilities staff manage systems such as power and cooling. DCIM can help relate these views—for example, by connecting IT assets with the facility infrastructure that supports them. The International Telecommunication Union’s 2016 description presents DCIM as integrating ICT and facility-management disciplines for centralized monitoring, management and intelligent capacity planning: ITU’s DCIM overview.

DCIM does not automatically replace a building-management system, an IT service-management tool or specialist monitoring software. Whether it can exchange data with existing systems depends on the products, interfaces and protocols involved. Cisco identifies proprietary protocols as one possible interoperability challenge in its DCIM explainer.
What DCIM does not necessarily mean
- It is not just an asset list. Asset visibility may be part of DCIM, but the scope can also include monitoring, energy, capacity, maintenance and alarms.
- It is not just a sensor or power monitor. A single device can supply data to a DCIM system, but it is not by itself the full discipline or software category.
- It does not guarantee identical features across products. Implementations differ, and integrations depend on the systems and protocols available at a site.
- It does not necessarily replace other management tools. The cited definitions describe integration and management functions, not a universal replacement for building or IT systems.
What to check when comparing DCIM systems
If you are evaluating DCIM software rather than just learning the acronym, focus on fit with your data center’s equipment and workflows:
