A 2015 test of NQ Mobile Vault (NQ Vault) for Android, version 6.1.00.22, reported that the app XOR-transformed only the first 128 bytes of a file with a single-byte key and left the remainder unchanged. That is not whole-file, modern encryption, so the tested build could not provide the confidentiality users would reasonably expect from a file vault. The finding is historical: it does not establish how later versions behaved or whether NQ Vault is still available.
What the reported test found
Softpedia reported on April 7, 2015 that a developer examined Android NQ Mobile Vault version 6.1.00.22. The researcher initially expected AES-128 based on the product’s claims, but testing indicated a much simpler transformation: a one-byte XOR operation applied to the first 128 bytes of each file. The rest of the file was reportedly unchanged.
An Infosec Institute walkthrough published April 14, 2015 describes similar steps and observations, including extraction of an app file and identification of the single-byte XOR behavior. It corroborates the core technical account but is also a historical third-party analysis, not a current vendor audit.
Why that method is inadequate for a file vault
Only a small prefix was transformed
Changing 128 bytes does not conceal the contents that follow. For most photos, documents, videos and archives, the overwhelming majority of the original data would remain in its original form. File headers, metadata and recognizable content could also remain exposed, depending on the format.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
A one-byte XOR is not a modern encryption scheme
XOR is a reversible bitwise operation. When the same single-byte value is reused across files or data, it does not provide the properties expected from authenticated encryption: a large secret key, secure key handling, protection against tampering and resistance to practical cryptanalysis. Applying it to a short prefix is obfuscation, not meaningful protection for an entire file.
That explains the “worthless encryption” wording used in contemporary headlines. The technically supportable conclusion is narrower: the behavior reported for the tested build did not amount to robust confidentiality for complete files. It does not prove that every file was readable in every circumstance, nor that every release of NQ Vault used the same method.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What is known about the app and its reach
| Claim | What the contemporary reporting says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Product and build | NQ Mobile Vault (NQ Vault), Android version 6.1.00.22 | The specific version examined in the 2015 report; not evidence about later releases. |
| Google Play installations | 10–50 million, as reported by Softpedia from the 2015 listing | A historical store-listing range, not a current user count. |
| Company user description | More than 30 million users, as relayed by Softpedia | A company claim reported in 2015, not an independently audited total. |
ExtremeTech’s April 6, 2015 report carried the product description and these period-specific popularity claims. They establish why the issue attracted attention at the time, not how many people use the app today.
How strong is the evidence?
- Specific: The account identifies an Android version and a concrete observed transformation.
- Corroborated: A contemporaneous Infosec Institute walkthrough describes the same single-byte XOR and unchanged remainder.
- Limited: The available material is historical secondary reporting and a technical walkthrough. No current primary vendor statement or current independent assessment is established here.
Softpedia attributed the following description to researcher NinjaDoge24 while discussing a revised test utility: “Now it only XOR’s the first 128 bytes of the file with a single byte,”. The quotation is reproduced as reported by Softpedia; it should not be treated as a current NQ Mobile statement.

What the finding does—and does not—prove
It does show
- The tested build’s reported file transformation was limited to a 128-byte prefix.
- The remainder of a transformed file was reportedly left unchanged.
- The observed behavior does not support a claim of whole-file, AES-grade confidentiality for that build.
It does not show
- That all NQ Vault versions, platforms or releases used the same implementation.
- That every user’s files were accessed or exposed.
- That the app remains downloadable or supported today.
- That a later update corrected or preserved the issue.
How to assess any mobile file-vault app
When evaluating a vault, ask for evidence about the exact build rather than relying on a product label such as “encrypted.”
- Check coverage: Determine whether the entire file is encrypted, not just a header or fixed prefix.
- Identify the construction: Look for a recognized, current authenticated-encryption design rather than an unspecified transformation or homemade algorithm.
- Understand key handling: Find out how keys are generated, protected, recovered and separated from the stored ciphertext. A password that is merely obscured inside the app is not a secure key-management system.
- Pin down the version: Record the operating system, app version and assessment date. Security behavior can change between releases.
- Look for independent verification: Prefer a reproducible technical audit or published security documentation over installation counts and marketing language.
The practical takeaway for former users
If you used NQ Mobile Vault around 2015, treat the reported Android 6.1.00.22 behavior as a reason not to assume that files were securely protected. The historical reports do not establish the state of a current installation, so verify the exact version and migrate sensitive files to a solution whose whole-file encryption and key management are documented and independently assessed. Do not infer present-day security—or present-day availability—from the 2015 reports.
