Haptic gloves can let long-distance partners send simple touch-like gestures: in the Flex-N-Feel prototype, one person’s finger movements trigger vibrations in the other person’s glove. In a small study of nine couples, participants said the gloves made conversations more enjoyable and helped them feel more emotionally connected. The system conveyed vibration—not literal touch—and the study does not show that gloves improve relationships generally.
What Flex-N-Feel sends between partners
Flex-N-Feel is a paired research prototype developed by researchers at Simon Fraser University. Sensors detect when one partner bends or flexes fingers inside a glove; connected electronics then produce vibrotactile sensations on the other partner’s glove. The gesture can accompany an audio or video conversation, giving partners a way to send a simple touch-like signal while communicating remotely. The 2017 study by Singhal and colleagues describes the system and its evaluation.
So, can you feel someone’s touch through a glove over the internet? Not as physical contact. Flex-N-Feel communicates finger movement through vibration; it does not reproduce skin-to-skin contact or transmit a partner’s hand physically.
What the study found—and what it did not
The evaluation involved nine couples using the gloves alongside either an audio-only Skype call or a Skype video call. Participants reported enjoying conversations more with the gloves, feeling more emotionally connected, and having intimate moments. They described using the gestures for shared actions, playful exchanges, intimate touches, and sensing a partner’s presence. These are participants’ reported experiences in a small prototype study, not proof of a lasting or causal relationship benefit.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Promising: Participants described the gloves as adding an expressive, touch-like channel to remote conversations.
- Not established: The study does not demonstrate clinical outcomes, lasting relationship improvements, or the same effect for couples generally.
- Not established: The available study does not establish that Flex-N-Feel is sold as a consumer product.
Why video helped make gestures understandable
The researchers tested the gloves during both audio-only and video calls. They report: “Video was important to aid couples in understanding each other’s actions.” The authors’ point is that visual context helped partners interpret what a glove gesture meant. The finding supports treating haptics as an addition to familiar communication, rather than assuming vibration alone explains every gesture; it does not establish that video is always necessary.

How Flex-N-Feel fits into later smart-glove research
A 2024 Nature Communications paper describes a different textile-glove system with embedded tactile sensors and vibrotactile actuators. It investigates recording, reproducing, and transferring tactile interactions for applications such as skill development and robot teleoperation—not long-distance couples’ communication.
For that separate system, the authors report actuator spatial resolution of up to 4 cm² and tactile sensing resolution of 0.25 cm². Those are technical results for the 2024 paper’s glove, not specifications for Flex-N-Feel or evidence of a couples’ product. Read the 2024 Nature Communications study.
