The original future-tense announcement is outdated: Hyderabad is operational, while current investment announcements describe further cloud and AI infrastructure expansion in Hyderabad and Mumbai.
Where AWS’s second India region is—and when it launched
AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) is AWS’s second infrastructure region in India. Mumbai was the first, opening in June 2016. AWS announced the Hyderabad region in 2020 with a target of mid-2022, then launched it on November 22, 2022. AWS’s launch announcement and its India overview provide the official details.
What the Hyderabad region means for users
Latency and application location
Hosting an application and its data in a region closer to its users can reduce network distance and may improve response times. Hyderabad gives organizations another AWS location to consider for workloads serving Telangana and nearby areas. The actual latency depends on users’ locations, network routes, application design, and the AWS services involved; the region’s launch alone does not guarantee a particular response time.
Availability Zones and resilience
The Hyderabad region has three Availability Zones. AWS describes them as having independent power, cooling, and physical security, connected through redundant, low-latency networks. Availability Zones are designed to support resilient deployments within a region, but customers still need to design their applications for failure—for example, by distributing appropriate components across zones.

Data residency and compliance
Using the Hyderabad region can help organizations keep supported AWS workloads and data in India, where that meets their requirements. A region does not by itself establish compliance: organizations must confirm which services and data are in scope, configure them appropriately, and assess the laws and rules that apply to their industry and use case.
Disaster recovery across regions
Hyderabad and Mumbai offer two geographically distinct Indian AWS regions that organizations can consider for multi-region architectures. A second region can provide an option for disaster recovery, but it does not automatically replicate data or fail over applications. Customers must select and configure replication, recovery procedures, capacity, and the services their plan depends on.

Region choice should follow workload needs, not a blanket assumption that the two locations have identical services or capacity. Confirm current service availability in AWS’s regional services list. For private network links, AWS’s Direct Connect information can help explain the service; the 100 Gbps figure is specifically the July 2025 expansion at STT Hyderabad DC1, not a general throughput guarantee for every connection.

These are announced estimates and plans, not guarantees that spending, construction, or capacity will follow an unchanged schedule. AWS director of Data Centre Delivery Anurag Khilnani said in the 2026 announcement that AWS had deepened its investment in Telangana since launching Hyderabad infrastructure in 2022.

AWS’s 2026 announcement describes expanded cloud infrastructure plans in India, including Hyderabad, and cites a groundbreaking announcement in Telangana. That supports saying AWS is planning further infrastructure development in the state; it does not establish that a new AWS region is being launched. A region is a distinct geographic AWS location made up of Availability Zones, while an individual data center or construction project is not itself a region.

Related cloud-skills context
