Yes, some humanoid-robot videos show real work rather than staged lab tricks—but a video proves only the capability visible in that clip. The clearest commercial evidence is Agility Robotics’ Digit handling totes at a GXO warehouse: Digit completed its first day in regular operations on June 5, 2024, moving totes from cobots onto conveyors. Other clips show impressive walking, balancing, climbing, manipulation or medical and construction work, but those demonstrations are not automatically evidence of reliable autonomy or customer deployment.

What the best-known Digit videos show

Agility Robotics’ Digit is a two-legged, human-scale robot designed for logistics and repetitive tasks. In the GXO workflow at a SPANX facility, Digit moved totes from other robots (cobots) and placed them on conveyors. Agility Arc, the company’s cloud fleet platform, coordinated the work.

This is more specific—and more meaningful—than a short clip of a robot walking across a stage. GXO and Agility announced that the pilot followed a proof of concept in late 2023 and became the industry’s first formal commercial deployment of humanoid robots and the first humanoid Robots-as-a-Service deployment. Agility’s deployment video says Digit completed its first day of work for GXO on June 5, 2024, as part of regular operations.

GXO’s chief automation officer, Adrian Stoch, described the project as deploying “fully operational Digit humanoids into a live warehouse environment.” Agility CEO Peggy Johnson said the robots were deployed at a customer site, generating revenue and addressing business problems. Those statements are company claims, but they are tied to a dated customer announcement rather than an undated promotional demonstration.

Are humanoid-robot videos real?

Often, yes—but “real” has several meanings. A clip can document a real machine performing a real movement while still being teleoperated, heavily supervised, edited, or limited to one carefully prepared attempt. Treat each video as evidence of the displayed behavior, not as proof that the robot can repeat it indefinitely in arbitrary conditions.

What to check What a strong answer looks like What remains unknown without more evidence
Task and environment A dated description identifies the warehouse, workflow and object being handled. Whether the same task works with different layouts, loads or lighting.
Control method The maker explains autonomy, fleet software, imitation learning or human supervision. How often an operator intervenes and what decisions remain manual.
Safety There is a shared-workspace procedure, stopping behavior and a stated operating boundary. Performance around unexpected people, dropped items or blocked paths.
Commercial maturity A customer, date and regular operation are named. Uptime, throughput, maintenance cost and results over a longer period.

What Digit actually does at work

A defined warehouse handoff

Digit’s announced GXO assignment is not “general human labor.” It is a particular handoff: receiving totes from cobots and putting them on conveyors. That narrow scope is useful because warehouse automation succeeds through repeatable workflows, not through a robot merely looking human.

Arc connects robots to the operation

Agility Arc is described as the cloud platform for commanding and scheduling fleets. In the GXO example, software orchestration is part of the product: it assigns work and connects robot actions to conveyor and warehouse processes. A capable body without that integration would still leave people managing every move.

Production experience claim

Agility’s current homepage reports 65,000 hours of real production experience for Digit and identifies Arc as the platform running its fleets. This is a company-reported figure, not an independently audited statistic, so it should be read as Agility’s current claim.

Which robot is the most agile?

There is no defensible single winner from a collection of edited videos. “Agility” may mean fast walking, recovery from a shove, climbing, balancing on uneven ground, precise manipulation or switching between tasks. A quadruped may outperform a humanoid on rough terrain, while a humanoid may fit environments built for people. A medical robot may be judged on precision rather than speed.

Compare robots on the same task and conditions. Record the surface, payload, speed, number of attempts, failures, operator assistance and safety constraints. Without those controls, a spectacular movement clip demonstrates a movement—not overall superiority.

Are the robots autonomous or teleoperated?

Video alone usually cannot answer that. A robot can walk autonomously while a person approves goals, or it can use remote assistance for unusual objects and recoveries. Fleet software can schedule a job without removing human oversight at the robot level.

For any clip, look for explicit language about autonomous navigation, remote operation, imitation learning, intervention rate and what happens when an object is misplaced. The GXO announcement establishes a live workflow and Arc-based orchestration, but it does not, by itself, publish an intervention rate or prove that every action is unsupervised.

What “robot delivery” means in these videos

Delivery can refer to very different systems: a warehouse robot transferring totes, an autonomous mobile robot carrying goods through a facility, a sidewalk delivery machine, or a humanoid loading and unloading items. The Digit evidence here is warehouse logistics, not last-mile delivery to homes. Its announced job ends with placing totes on conveyors.

That distinction matters when a headline uses “delivery robot” broadly. Always identify the destination, handoff and environment before comparing systems.

What the broader robot-video roundups contain

IEEE Spectrum’s June 28, 2024 “Video Friday: Humanoids Get a Job” illustrates how wide the category is. Its roundup includes humanoids, quadrupeds, medical robots, construction robots, research platforms and other demonstrations. These machines solve different problems and should not be ranked from a single agility reel.

Axios reported on March 14, 2024 that Digit was being tested by Amazon and deployed at a Spanx warehouse through GXO. It also described Arc as a cloud fleet-command system and reported Agility’s plan for a manufacturing facility that could eventually produce 10,000 two-legged robots annually. That manufacturing figure was a contemporaneous plan, not a guaranteed result.

How to judge a robot video in practice

  1. Identify the machine and date. Check whether the maker names a production model or a research prototype.
  2. Describe the task precisely. Note the object, payload, route, surface and handoff instead of calling it simply “delivery.”
  3. Separate movement from work. Walking, running or dancing is not the same as completing a useful workflow.
  4. Find the control disclosure. Look for autonomy, teleoperation, remote assistance and fleet-software details.
  5. Check the human context. Ask whether people share the space and what safety controls are stated.
  6. Prefer deployment evidence. A named customer, dated operation and repeatable process carry more weight than an edited showcase.
  7. Look for operating numbers. Throughput, uptime, intervention frequency and failure recovery are more informative than dramatic footage.

What these videos do—and do not—prove

  • They can prove that a particular robot performed the shown action under the shown conditions.
  • They can document a real customer deployment when a dated customer announcement identifies the site and workflow.
  • They do not establish general-purpose intelligence, unsupervised autonomy or reliability across every warehouse.
  • They do not make a research prototype commercially available.
  • They do not support a fair “most agile” ranking without common tests.

Are warehouse humanoids really being used at work?

In the documented Digit case, yes: Agility and GXO said Digit entered regular operations at a SPANX facility on June 5, 2024, performing the tote-to-conveyor task. That is evidence of a paid, customer-site deployment, not proof that humanoids are already widespread across warehouses. Scale, economics, safety performance and long-term reliability require separate measurements.
