Code that runs on servers you do not control should check for it or, usually, use a variable that matches the information it actually needs.
What PHP guarantees about $_SERVER
PHP populates $_SERVER from values supplied by the web server and the execution environment. The PHP manual explicitly cautions that servers may omit documented entries or provide additional ones. Therefore, the presence of a key is a deployment detail, not a cross-server contract.
SCRIPT_URI is not listed among the current manual’s documented $_SERVER indices. That does not prove that no server ever sets it; it means portable PHP code should not require it without an existence check and environment-specific confirmation.
A 2010 SitePoint forum discussion reports SCRIPT_URI as NULL on the questioner’s local XAMPP installation. That is a useful warning, but it is one historical observation—not a current compatibility matrix for Apache, nginx, PHP-FPM, CGI, proxies, or hosting panels.

Choose the variable for the value you need
| Requirement | Preferred value | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| URI used to access the page | REQUEST_URI |
Represents the incoming request URI. Confirm that your application wants the public route, including its query string. |
| Path of the executing PHP script | SCRIPT_NAME |
May identify the underlying script rather than a public route rewritten by the web server. |
| Whether PHP sees an HTTPS request | HTTPS |
PHP documents this as non-empty for HTTPS requests. Reverse-proxy deployments need configuration-aware handling. |
| Host for an absolute URL | Validated request host or configured canonical host | Do not assume SERVER_NAME is trustworthy; under some Apache configurations it can reflect a client-supplied hostname. |
SCRIPT_URI |
Use only as an optional value | Not guaranteed by PHP and not documented as a portable server index. |
Use REQUEST_URI for the incoming route
If the application needs the URI that the client used to reach the page, read REQUEST_URI defensively:
$requestUri = $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] ?? '/';
This is different from the executing script. With URL rewriting, a request such as /products/42 can be dispatched internally to /index.php. In that case, REQUEST_URI describes the public request, while SCRIPT_NAME describes the script PHP is running.
If you need to display the value in HTML, escape it for that output context:

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
echo htmlspecialchars($requestUri, ENT_QUOTES | ENT_SUBSTITUTE, 'UTF-8');
Keep in mind that REQUEST_URI can include a query string. If the application needs only the path, split the URI before processing it rather than assuming the value contains a path alone.

For links relative to the current PHP script or diagnostics about which script is running, use a guarded read of SCRIPT_NAME:
$scriptPath = $_SERVER['SCRIPT_NAME'] ?? '';
Do not substitute it for the public URL in a rewritten application. The two values answer different questions, and choosing the wrong one can produce links to an internal front controller instead of the route users requested.

How to build an absolute URL safely
An absolute URL is composed of a scheme, host, and path. No single $_SERVER entry reliably supplies all three for every deployment. For security-sensitive links, password-reset messages, canonical tags, or other stable output, configure the canonical origin in the application:
$canonicalOrigin = 'https://example.com'; // application configuration
$path = $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] ?? '/';
$url = rtrim($canonicalOrigin, '/') . $path;
A configured origin avoids turning an attacker-controlled host header into a link sent to users. Validate and normalize the path according to the application’s requirements before using it in redirects, emails, or markup.
If the application must infer the scheme, PHP documents HTTPS as non-empty when the request is through HTTPS:

$scheme = !empty($_SERVER['HTTPS']) ? 'https' : 'http';
That simple check describes what PHP sees at the current process. When a TLS-terminating reverse proxy sits in front of PHP, the proxy and application must be configured to pass and trust the original scheme; do not blindly trust arbitrary forwarded headers.
Likewise, treat HTTP_HOST as untrusted input unless the deployment validates it against an allow-list. The historical advice to concatenate a scheme, HTTP_HOST, and REQUEST_URI can be useful only after the host and proxy trust model have been addressed.
If you must support SCRIPT_URI
Use an existence check and define a documented fallback. The fallback should reflect the application’s meaning of “URL,” not merely silence a notice:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
$scriptUri = $_SERVER['SCRIPT_URI'] ?? null;
if ($scriptUri === null) {
// Choose an application-specific fallback, such as a configured origin
// plus SCRIPT_NAME or REQUEST_URI.
$scriptUri = rtrim($canonicalOrigin, '/')
. ($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] ?? '/');
}
This makes the optional nature of the value explicit. It does not make SCRIPT_URI portable, and it does not establish that the fallback is correct for every rewrite or proxy arrangement. Test the deployed stack and document which server integration is expected to provide the key.
Practical decision checklist
- Need the public route the client requested? Start with
REQUEST_URI. - Need the PHP file being executed? Use
SCRIPT_NAME. - Need a stable absolute URL? Prefer an application-configured canonical origin.
- Need the request scheme behind a proxy? Configure the proxy trust boundary before interpreting forwarded data.
- Considering
SCRIPT_URI? Treat it as optional, check it withisset()or??, and verify the actual deployment. - Generating security-sensitive links? Validate the host or avoid request-derived hosts entirely.
Bottom line
$_SERVER['SCRIPT_URI'] is not a reliable cross-server interface in PHP. It may exist in one environment and be absent in another. Use REQUEST_URI or SCRIPT_NAME according to whether you need the incoming route or executing script, and use a validated or configured origin when an absolute URL must be trustworthy and stable.
