For a custom dropdown, remove an authored image with background-image: none;. If the image comes from a background shorthand, replace or override that shorthand instead. For a native HTML <select>, first determine whether the image is on the closed control or in the browser’s opened picker: CSS can change the control, but opened-picker styling remains platform-dependent.
Identify which dropdown you are styling
The fix depends on the element and on where the image appears.
| Situation | What you can usually change | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Custom HTML/CSS dropdown | Remove the image from the element or its wrapper with CSS. | A parent or pseudo-element may be painting the visible image instead. |
Native <select>, image on the closed control |
Override authored background declarations; optionally remove some native styling with appearance: none. |
Native controls are rendered partly by the browser and operating system. |
| Native opened picker | Only limited styling is consistently available. | The menu may retain browser or operating-system appearance even when the closed control changes. |
Remove an authored CSS background image
Override background-image
Inspect the dropdown in your browser’s developer tools and find the rule that sets background-image. Override it on the same element with a selector that matches the original rule or has greater cascade precedence:
.dropdown {
background-image: none;
}
The value none means that the element has no CSS background image. Set a color separately if the image was providing the visible surface:

.dropdown {
background-image: none;
background-color: #fff;
}
Check the background shorthand
An image can be introduced by the shorthand rather than by a separate background-image declaration. In that case, override the shorthand:
.dropdown {
background: #fff;
}
This resets the complete background shorthand, including properties such as repeat, position, and size. Use it only when those other settings should also be replaced. If they must remain, override only the individual image property after the shorthand:

Find images applied by a wrapper or pseudo-element
If removing the declaration from the dropdown does nothing, inspect its parent, button, list container, and ::before or ::after pseudo-elements. The visible image may be painted by one of those elements. Remove the corresponding declaration there, or disable an image-bearing pseudo-element only if it has no other purpose:
.dropdown::before,
.dropdown::after {
background-image: none;
content: none;
}
Do not remove a pseudo-element blindly: it might contain an arrow, focus indicator, or other required control cue.

Use browser DevTools to locate the winning rule
- Right-click the closed dropdown and choose Inspect.
- In the Styles or Computed panel, search for
background-imageandbackground. - Look for the declaration that is not crossed out; that is the rule currently winning the cascade.
- Temporarily uncheck that declaration. If the image disappears, copy its selector into your stylesheet and add the intended override.
- If no declaration controls it, inspect ancestor elements and the element’s
::beforeand::afterpseudo-elements. - Reload with the override in your real stylesheet, then verify hover, focus, disabled, and open states.
Handle a native HTML select
When the image is on the closed control
Start with an explicit background override:
select.dropdown {
background-image: none;
}
If the browser’s native styling is also unwanted, you can request a simpler author-controlled presentation:
select.dropdown {
appearance: none;
background-image: none;
background-color: #fff;
}
Removing native appearance changes the control’s presentation. Add a clear border, spacing, and an obvious focus style, and make sure users can still recognize it as a select control. If you remove a built-in arrow, provide an accessible replacement or retain another clear indication that the field opens a list.

When the image appears only after opening the picker
The opened list may be rendered by the browser or operating system rather than as ordinary page content. appearance: none can remove some default system styling from the select itself, but it does not guarantee identical control over every platform’s opened menu. Test the result in the browsers and operating systems you support.
Native select or custom dropdown?
Keep the native select when
- You need reliable keyboard operation, screen-reader semantics, mobile behavior, and form submission.
- The remaining native appearance is acceptable.
- You only need to remove an authored image from the closed control.
Use a custom widget only when
- You need visual or interaction control that native selects cannot provide.
- You are prepared to implement keyboard navigation, focus management, selected-state announcements, pointer interaction, and dismissal behavior.
- The implementation preserves appropriate form semantics and accessible names instead of replacing the control with a decorative element.
Native HTML selects have historically been difficult to style consistently because browsers commonly use platform-native UI. A custom implementation provides more visual control but transfers responsibility for accessible behavior to your code.

Common reasons the first fix fails
- The wrong element was edited: the image belongs to a wrapper, option-list container, or pseudo-element.
- A shorthand wins: a later
backgrounddeclaration reintroduces the image. - The state has its own rule:
:hover,:focus,:open, or an expanded-state class sets another image. - The image is native UI: the browser or operating system paints the opened picker, so page CSS cannot fully remove it.
- The cascade is weaker: your selector loads earlier or is less specific than the original rule. Prefer a deliberate selector and stylesheet order over unnecessary
!important.
Minimal patterns
Custom dropdown
.dropdown {
background-image: none;
background-color: #fff;
}
Native select with controlled closed appearance
select.dropdown {
appearance: none;
background: #fff;
border: 1px solid #777;
padding: 0.5rem 2rem 0.5rem 0.75rem;
}
The second pattern intentionally replaces the complete background shorthand. Add your own arrow only if the design needs one, and ensure the focus indicator remains visible.
