To remove .php from a PHP URL, configure your web server to internally rewrite a clean path such as /about to about.php. PHP itself does not change the address bar. Use Apache mod_rewrite when the site runs Apache, or Nginx try_files and PHP-FPM routing when it runs Nginx.
What an extensionless PHP URL does
When a visitor requests /about, the server can look for about.php, execute that script, and return its response while leaving /about in the browser. This is an internal rewrite, not a redirect. The browser therefore does not see the filename or extension.
PHP does not independently remove text from URLs. The required configuration belongs to Apache, Nginx, a hosting control panel, or an application router. Apache rules cannot be pasted into Nginx configuration; use the instructions for the server that actually receives the request. See the Apache rewrite documentation and Nginx core-module documentation.
Choose the routing method
| Option | Best fit | Configuration location | Important checks |
|---|---|---|---|
Apache mod_rewrite |
Apache hosting where rewrite rules are permitted | .htaccess or virtual-host/server configuration |
AllowOverride, document root, existing rules, subdirectories, and loops |
Nginx try_files |
Nginx hosting with server-configuration access | Nginx server/location blocks |
root or alias, candidate order, PHP-FPM target, and location precedence |
| Application front controller | Frameworks or sites that route requests through one entry script | Web-server fallback plus the application router | Query-string and path forwarding, route matching, and static-file bypass |
Apache: map /about to about.php
For Apache, enable mod_rewrite and put rules in the site’s .htaccess file if the host allows per-directory overrides, or in the virtual-host configuration. A one-file-per-page setup can use a guarded rule such as:

RewriteEngine On
# Leave real files and directories alone
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
# Internally map /about to /about.php when that script exists
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.+?)/?$ $1.php [L]
The !-f and !-d conditions preserve images, stylesheets, uploads, and real directories. The final condition prevents a clean path from being mapped to a script that does not exist. Adapt the rule to the document root and directory layout; a site installed in a subdirectory or served through an Alias may need different path handling. Apache notes that RewriteBase is usually unnecessary, but it can matter when URL and filesystem paths differ. Consult the per-directory rewrite guide.
Front-controller Apache sites
Frameworks commonly send every non-file and non-directory request to index.php instead of looking for a matching script. In that design, retain the real-file and real-directory guards, then route the remaining request to the application’s entry point. The framework, not the filename, decides whether /products/42 is valid.

Prevent Apache rewrite loops
Apache may process URL mapping in more than one round. Keep conditions that distinguish actual files from clean requests, and inspect the rule’s processing flags when combining rules. The Apache rewrite-flags reference explains flags that stop or pass processing to another phase.
Nginx: use try_files and PHP-FPM
Nginx does not read .htaccess. Add the equivalent logic to the Nginx server configuration, then reload Nginx after validating the configuration. A typical candidate sequence is:

location / {
try_files $uri $uri/ $uri.php?$args;
}
try_files checks the candidates in order: an existing file, an existing directory, and then the same URI with .php appended while retaining the query string. Your PHP location must pass the resolved script filename to the configured PHP-FPM socket or upstream. The exact root/alias, socket, security restrictions, and existing locations are site-specific; adapt them using the Nginx documentation rather than copying an unrelated server block.
Update links and decide what happens to old .php URLs
Change navigation, forms, sitemaps, and content links to the clean paths, for example /about instead of /about.php. Choose one policy for visitors who still request the old filename:

- Redirect: send
/about.phpto/aboutwith an external redirect so the clean URL is canonical. - Keep both: serve both paths, accepting that two URLs can expose the same page.
- Block the old path: return an error when legacy URLs should no longer work.
If you redirect, make the rule apply only to a client-requested .php URL, not to the internal rewrite. Preserve required query parameters and test for redirect loops. Canonical tags should match the URL policy you chose.
Test the clean URL before publishing
- Confirm whether the origin is Apache, Nginx, a managed proxy, or a combination.
- Verify that the target script is inside the configured document root and that the server account can read it.
- Request the clean path and confirm the expected page loads while the browser remains on that path.
- Test query strings, nested paths, trailing-slash variants, static assets, real directories, and a nonexistent path.
- Request the legacy
.phpURL and verify that its behavior matches your redirect, keep, or block policy. - Review web-server and PHP/FastCGI logs for rewrite failures, permission errors, and script-resolution errors.
Does hiding .php improve security?
Not by itself. Removing a filename extension can reduce incidental information disclosure, but it does not protect vulnerable code or access to a script. The PHP manual states that “In general, security by obscurity is one of the weakest forms of security.” Use secure coding, timely patching, authentication and authorization, safe file permissions, and a correctly configured server. See PHP’s Hiding PHP guidance.

When your host does not provide configuration access
Ask the host whether it supports Apache rewrite rules or Nginx server-level routing, and whether PHP-FPM is configured for the intended document root. If you cannot change either, an application front controller may still work when the host provides a suitable fallback, but a PHP script cannot reliably hide its own extension from the web server.
