A click on a plain <div> or <a href> does not submit form fields, so PHP will not receive a normal $_POST array from that click. Put the fields in one <form method="post"> and use a submit button. If the design must look like a link or an existing element must remain, style a semantic button or use JavaScript to submit the form.
Use one form and a submit button
Form controls are sent by the browser when a form is submitted. PHP receives their values under each control’s name attribute; an id by itself never creates a $_POST key.

</form>The button can be styled so it looks like an anchor while retaining submit behavior:

}This is preferable to changing an anchor’s behavior because a button already supports keyboard activation, focus, and form semantics.

Check the POST request and the intended action in PHP
$_POST is populated for HTTP POST form submissions using application/x-www-form-urlencoded or multipart/form-data. Check the request method, then validate the named action and other input before processing it.

?>Use only $_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD'] === 'POST' when every POST to the endpoint has the same meaning. A dedicated field such as action is safer when several operations share one endpoint. Validate lengths, formats, permissions, and any business rules rather than trusting the submitted value.

Why a plain div or href does not work

An anchor is the right control when the goal is navigation. Do not use href="javascript:..." to disguise a form submission; it gives confusing navigation semantics and creates avoidable accessibility problems.
If the existing div must trigger the form
First choice: replace it with a button and keep the visual styling. If changing the markup is impossible, make the element keyboard-operable, expose button semantics, and submit the form when it is clicked or activated with Enter or Space.

</script>requestSubmit() performs a normal form submission and runs built-in validation. It also allows the form’s submit event to run. If the form has a submit button whose name/value must be sent, pass that button to requestSubmit(button); otherwise, do not assume a button field will appear in $_POST.
If an anchor must initiate submission
Keep the anchor only when its existing role or markup cannot be changed. Prevent navigation and submit the form from its click handler:

</script>This removes the link’s normal navigation behavior, so a styled button remains the clearer and more accessible implementation. If the destination genuinely needs navigation, use the anchor and encode the state in the URL instead of expecting POST fields.

- Only successful, enabled form controls are submitted. Disabled inputs and unchecked checkboxes are omitted.
- The server key comes from
name, notid: use<input name="query" id="query">to receive$_POST['query']. - A submitter’s own
name/valueis included when that submit button submits the form. A script that calls a submission method without a submitter may omit it, so use a hidden action field when the action must always be identifiable. - Do not use
isset($_POST)as proof that a particular field is present. Test the specific key and, where appropriate, its expected value.
When the request body is JSON
JSON sent with Content-Type: application/json is not automatically mapped to ordinary $_POST fields. Read and decode the raw request body instead:
