Wrap the Unicode character in a <span> when you need to target it independently. This does not reliably recolor emoji-style symbols, such as some shopping-trolley characters, because browsers and operating systems may render those as multicolored emoji.
Use color for text-rendered Unicode icons
Unicode symbols do not have a built-in “black” or “greyscale” version that CSS selects. When the browser uses a monochrome text font, the character behaves like any other text: the inherited color property controls it.

}You can use any valid CSS color, including a grayscale value such as #666, rgb(80 80 80), or currentColor. A separate span is useful when the label and icon need different colors.
Why a shopping trolley may ignore your color
Some Unicode characters are classified and rendered as emoji. In that case, the browser may substitute a color emoji font or image-like glyph instead of a monochrome text glyph. Setting color: black can then leave the colored artwork unchanged.

Rendering varies with the operating system, installed fonts, browser, and the exact character or presentation selected. The 2018 SitePoint discussion reported different results across systems, but it did not provide a current browser compatibility matrix. Therefore, do not promise that a trolley symbol will become black in every environment.
Try text presentation, but treat it as optional
Some symbols support a text-style variation selector. You can test the text presentation form, although support and appearance still depend on the font and platform:

Use an icon font or another deliberately monochrome icon asset instead of relying on the system’s emoji fallback. The SitePoint thread specifically mentioned Font Awesome; the original poster later reported that it produced the desired buy-button appearance. Another participant suggested Fontello, which can generate a selected icon font and accompanying CSS.

Those were forum suggestions and a reported outcome from a February 2018 discussion, not a current independent comparison of compatibility, accessibility, licensing, or performance. Whichever icon system you choose, provide an accessible text label or an appropriate accessible name rather than making the icon carry meaning by itself.

Checklist for a black or grayscale icon
- Inspect whether the character is being rendered as ordinary text or as emoji.
- Apply
colorto the character or a wrapping<span>. - Test on the operating systems and browsers your visitors use.
- If the symbol remains multicolored, replace it with a controlled icon font or asset.
- Keep a visible or programmatic text label for buttons and controls.
