Select a template, choose Create, and Office downloads a customizable file. Check the extension and any version requirements first: Office 2007 uses the Open XML template types listed below, but a current template may still depend on features that Office 2007 cannot reproduce.
Where can I get templates for Office 2007?
Use the built-in template browser
- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint 2007.
- Choose File > New.
- Browse the available categories, such as calendars, business cards, letters, brochures, newsletters, resumes, cover letters, and presentations.
- Select a template and choose Create. Microsoft describes this action as downloading a new file that you can customize.
The categories and online results shown by Microsoft can change over time. Microsoft’s current support guidance describes the workflow, but it does not guarantee that every template currently offered will work fully in Office 2007. Treat the template’s file extension, stated version, and feature requirements as compatibility checks rather than assuming that a listing is automatically suitable.
Use Microsoft’s online template collection
You can also browse Microsoft’s template collection in a web browser, download a suitable file, and open it in the matching Office 2007 application. If a download is offered in several formats, choose the Office Open XML template type for the application you use.
Which template file type does Word, Excel, or PowerPoint 2007 use?

The non-macro formats do not store VBA macro code. The macro-enabled formats are intended for templates that contain macros, so only enable or run macros from a source you trust.

How do I download an Excel 2007 budget template?
- Open Excel 2007 and select File > New, or browse Microsoft’s template collection online.
- Search or browse for a budget, household-finance, or similar spreadsheet.
- Inspect the download details and select an .xltx file when the template has no macros. Select .xltm only when you intentionally need its macros.
- Choose Create in the template browser, or download the file in your browser.
- Open the file in Excel 2007 and test formulas, charts, and controls before entering important financial data.
A template described as being for a newer Excel release may open in compatibility mode or lose features. Verify calculations and layout in your copy of Excel 2007 instead of assuming that a successful opening means every feature survived unchanged.
How do I create and save my own Office 2007 template?
- Create or open the document, workbook, or presentation you want to reuse.
- Choose File > Save As.
- In the file-type list, choose the template type for the application: Word Template (.dotx) or Word Macro-Enabled Template (.dotm); Excel Template (.xltx) or Excel Macro-Enabled Template (.xltm); or PowerPoint Template (.potx) or PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Template (.potm).
- Give the template a descriptive name and save it in a location you can find again.
For Word, use the macro-enabled type when the document contains VBA macros; otherwise use the non-macro template type. Apply the same distinction to Excel and PowerPoint.

What compatibility problems should Office 2007 users expect?
Newer features may be limited
Microsoft explains that compatibility mode can preserve layout while limiting newer features so an earlier Office version can edit a document. Word uses compatibility mode for Open XML documents created in Word 2007 and Word 2010. This helps with editing, but it does not make every feature in a contemporary template available in Office 2007. Unsupported chart types, controls, fonts, effects, formulas, or add-ins may be changed, removed, or displayed differently.
Check before relying on the file
- Confirm that the extension matches the application.
- Read any stated minimum Office version or feature requirement.
- Open a copy first and inspect page breaks, formulas, charts, fonts, and print output.
- Save a test result and reopen it in Office 2007 before using the template for important work.
Is it safe to keep using Office 2007 for downloaded templates?
Office 2007 reached end of support on October 10, 2017. Microsoft no longer provides technical support or security updates for it. Downloaded templates, especially macro-enabled files, therefore deserve extra caution: use trusted sources, scan downloads with current security software, and do not enable macros merely to view a template.

Microsoft recommends upgrading to Microsoft 365. That recommendation is separate from obtaining free templates; you do not need to buy Microsoft 365 to follow the documented template-download workflow. An upgrade is the option to consider if you need a supported Office installation and current security updates.
