Not universally. Cato Networks says its SASE Cloud Platform can remove the manual patching and emergency-fix work associated with separate LAN firewall appliances. That is a narrower operational claim than ending all network patching: organizations still maintain endpoints, switches, access points, Cato Sockets and other infrastructure. Cato introduced LAN NGFW in March 2025; its June 2026 documentation explains how enforcement works.
What Cato is actually claiming
LAN NGFW is a capability inside Cato’s SASE Cloud Platform, not a standalone firewall appliance. Cato says the platform converges LAN, WAN and Internet firewall functions, applies centrally managed policy and visibility, and avoids deploying separate LAN firewall hardware. Ofir Agasi, Cato’s vice-president of product management, described the approach as “always-up-to-date protection without the patching chaos of firewall appliances.” That is a vendor product claim, not independent proof that every network component becomes maintenance-free.
Cato’s launch announcement said LAN NGFW required no additional hardware. Current documentation describes policy enforcement on the Cato Socket already serving the site.
How traffic is inspected
Three policy domains
Cato documents three distinct firewall policy types in its Cato Management Application (CMA):
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Policy | Traffic covered | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Internet Firewall | Outbound Internet traffic | Internet-bound flows |
| WAN Firewall | Site-to-site and user-to-site traffic | Connections across Cato sites and remote users |
| Next-Gen LAN Firewall | Layer 7 east-west traffic | Traffic between VLANs and hosts at a site |
Same-site east-west flows stay local
When both source and destination hosts belong to the same Socket site, the Socket inspects and controls the flow locally under the LAN policy. Cato says this traffic does not travel to a Cato PoP. That distinction matters for latency, resilience and architecture diagrams: local host-to-host inspection is not cloud-PoP inspection.
Policy authoring, reporting and analytics remain centralized in the CMA. Cato’s stated design is to use shared context across Internet, WAN and LAN controls while keeping the enforcement point appropriate to the traffic path.

What “ending network patching” means in practice
The work Cato says customers can avoid
- Scheduling software patches for a dedicated LAN firewall appliance.
- Testing and rolling out emergency fixes on that appliance.
- Maintaining spare firewall hardware and planning its replacement cycle.
- Operating separate policy and visibility consoles for the LAN firewall.
Those responsibilities move from an enterprise’s appliance team to Cato’s managed cloud-and-Socket platform model. The customer still has to configure policy, review alerts, validate segmentation and operate the rest of the site.
The work that does not disappear
- Firmware and software maintenance for switches, wireless systems, routers and other appliances.
- Operating-system and application patching on servers, workstations and IoT devices.
- Updates or replacement requirements for the Cato Socket and associated connectivity.
- Configuration changes, access reviews, incident response and rule recertification.
- Maintenance obligations imposed by a customer’s other security or compliance systems.
“End to network patching” should therefore be read as “avoid patching the separate firewall appliance that this architecture replaces,” not as a promise of zero maintenance.

Why the 55-day figure needs careful handling
Launch coverage used a “patch gap” narrative around a statistic attributed by Computer Weekly on March 13, 2025, to Verizon’s 2024 Data Breach Investigations Report: businesses take an average of 55 days to remediate 50% of critical vulnerabilities. That figure describes remediation behavior broadly. It does not show that Cato LAN NGFW closes a 55-day vulnerability window, nor does it measure this feature’s performance.
The same launch material referred to vulnerability pressure affecting legacy firewall vendors, but the underlying study was not identified clearly enough to treat that claim as a verified statistic.

Cato LAN NGFW versus a standalone LAN firewall
The architectural trade-off is easiest to evaluate by asking where inspection occurs, who operates the control plane and what evidence supports the security outcome.
| Decision area | Cato LAN NGFW | Standalone LAN firewall |
|---|---|---|
| East-west inspection location | Socket at the site for same-Socket LAN flows; traffic remains local, according to Cato. | Dedicated appliance at the site or network edge, depending on design. |
| Policy management | CMA-managed LAN, WAN and Internet policy sets with centralized analytics. | Usually a device-specific management system; integration across domains depends on the deployment. |
| Appliance patching | Cato says customers avoid manual patching of the dedicated LAN firewall it replaces. | Customer or managed-service team normally schedules upgrades, fixes and hardware lifecycle work. |
| Segmentation and application awareness | Next-Gen LAN Firewall provides Layer 7 east-west policy, subject to the configured rules and supported traffic. | Depends on the firewall model, licenses, software version and rule design. |
| Independent efficacy evidence | No independent LAN-NGFW comparative efficacy or performance test was established for this article. | Evidence varies by product and test; no universal comparison is possible. |
What buyers should verify before replacing an appliance
- Map the traffic paths. Identify which VLAN-to-VLAN and host-to-host flows are behind the same Cato Socket, which cross sites, and which leave for the Internet.
- Translate rules into the three Cato policy sets. Separate Internet, WAN and LAN requirements instead of assuming one rule base covers every direction.
- Check local-failure behavior. Confirm how the Socket handles policy enforcement, connectivity loss and recovery for the site’s critical east-west flows.
- Test Layer 7 requirements. Validate application identification, inter-VLAN restrictions, exceptions and logging with representative production traffic.
- Reassign operational ownership. Document which updates Cato manages and which firmware, endpoint, switching and configuration tasks remain with the customer.
- Demand deployment-specific evidence. Ask for references, test results and performance data relevant to the organization’s topology; do not infer LAN results from a security-engine test that was not shown to evaluate LAN NGFW.
What the available evidence establishes—and what it does not
Cato’s product materials establish the intended architecture: centralized management, separate Internet/WAN/LAN policy functions and local Socket enforcement for same-site LAN flows. They support a credible reduction in dedicated-firewall lifecycle work.

They do not establish independent comparative efficacy, throughput, failover performance or a universal reduction in vulnerability exposure. A “near-perfect protection” result mentioned in launch coverage concerned an independent test of Cato’s security engine; the available description does not show that the test evaluated LAN NGFW specifically, so that result should not be transferred to this feature.
Bottom line
Cato’s SASE-native LAN NGFW can eliminate manual patching of a separate LAN firewall appliance when an organization adopts the platform and replaces that appliance’s role. It does not end patching across the network, and the available material does not prove superior LAN security or performance against standalone firewalls. Treat it as an appliance-lifecycle and policy-convergence decision, then validate local traffic behavior and remaining maintenance responsibilities in the target design.
