Yes, a catastrophic battery failure was considered a serious possibility—but Spaceway-1 was not confirmed to have exploded. In December 2019, the Boeing-built DirecTV backup satellite suffered irreversible thermal damage to its batteries. Boeing warned that the damaged cells could burst when eclipse season forced the spacecraft to use them, so the FCC authorized an emergency move to a disposal orbit before February 25, 2020.
What Spaceway-1 was
Spaceway-1 was a Boeing High Power 702 communications satellite operated by DirecTV. Launched in 2005, it provided backup Ka-band capacity over Alaska rather than carrying a primary customer service load. SpaceNews reported a mass of 6,080 kilograms and a design life of 12 years.
The satellite was positioned at 138.9° west longitude in the geostationary belt. Its age and backup role were important: DirecTV could shut down the payload while concentrating on safely disposing of the spacecraft.
What failed in December 2019
Spaceway-1 experienced a major anomaly that caused what DirecTV described in its January 19, 2020 FCC filing as “significant and irreversible thermal damage” to the batteries.

Boeing concluded that the damaged cells could no longer be guaranteed to tolerate the pressures associated with eclipse operations. The manufacturer’s assessment, quoted in the filing, was that “there is a significant risk that these battery cells could burst.” DirecTV therefore characterized the situation as a potential catastrophic battery failure, not as a routine end-of-life disposal.
Why eclipse season created an urgent deadline
In sunlight, Spaceway-1 could draw power directly from its solar arrays. DirecTV turned off the payload and avoided using the damaged batteries while sunlight was available.
That strategy could not work once the satellite entered Earth’s shadow. During each eclipse, the solar arrays would stop producing power and the batteries would have to carry the spacecraft. The FCC filing warned that “the risk of a catastrophic battery failure makes it urgent that Spaceway-1 be fully de-orbited and decommissioned prior to the February 25th start of eclipse season.”

DirecTV had roughly one month between its filing and that seasonal deadline. The concern was not that an explosion was inevitable, but that normal battery use would expose already damaged cells to a condition Boeing could not certify as safe.
How DirecTV and the FCC responded
Emergency authorization
On January 19, 2020, DirecTV Enterprises asked the Federal Communications Commission for Special Temporary Authority to conduct emergency operations. The request covered moving Spaceway-1 away from its operating location and waiving the usual requirement to deplete its propellant before disposal.
NASA’s Aeronautics and Space Report for fiscal year 2020 records that the FCC granted the authority that same day because of the unexpected battery thermal damage.

Moving above the geostationary arc
The planned destination was a disposal orbit approximately 300 kilometers above the geostationary arc. This type of higher “graveyard orbit” keeps a retired spacecraft from occupying the operational geostationary region, where active satellites maintain fixed positions relative to Earth.
The propellant problem
SpaceNews reported that Spaceway-1 still held about 73 kilograms of bipropellant. Comparable satellites normally require two to three months to vent their remaining fuel, but the eclipse deadline allowed only about one month. The FCC waiver let DirecTV prioritize rapid risk reduction instead of following the ordinary propellant-depletion timetable.

No verified report in the cited FCC, NASA or contemporaneous industry accounts establishes that Spaceway-1 exploded. Those records document a manufacturer-assessed risk and an emergency disposal maneuver.

The satellite’s payload operations were terminated because it was a backup spacecraft, and DirecTV reported that customers were not affected. The absence of an outage does not mean the battery concern was trivial; it meant the operator had enough operational flexibility to remove the payload from service before the hazardous eclipse period.
Could a satellite battery burst in orbit?
A spacecraft battery is repeatedly charged while the satellite is illuminated and discharged during eclipse. If cells have suffered severe internal or thermal damage, charging and operation can create stresses the manufacturer can no longer guarantee the cells will withstand. In Spaceway-1’s case, Boeing specifically warned that the cells could burst under eclipse-operation conditions.
The available documentation does not provide a numerical probability of bursting, identify a single publicly documented component as the initiating cause, or state that a rupture occurred. It supports a narrower conclusion: continued operation through eclipse season presented an unacceptable, manufacturer-identified risk compared with disposing of the satellite early.

What “graveyard orbit” means
A graveyard orbit is a disposal region above the operational geostationary belt. Retired satellites are moved there so they are less likely to interfere with active spacecraft holding geostationary positions. The maneuver is a controlled end-of-mission procedure, not an attempt to make a damaged satellite disappear.
Spaceway-1’s case differed from routine disposal because the operator had to balance three constraints at once: a damaged battery, limited time before eclipse season, and residual propellant that would normally take longer to vent.
What this incident does—and does not—show
- Established: Spaceway-1 was a Boeing-built DirecTV backup satellite launched in 2005.
- Established: A December 2019 anomaly caused irreversible thermal battery damage.
- Established: Boeing assessed a significant risk that the damaged cells could burst during eclipse operations.
- Established: The FCC authorized an emergency move to a disposal orbit on January 19, 2020.
- Established: DirecTV reported no customer outage.
- Not established: A published numerical probability of explosion.
- Not established: That Spaceway-1 actually exploded.
The most accurate description is therefore “precautionary emergency disposal after a serious battery-failure assessment,” rather than “a satellite that definitely exploded” or “an explosion that was certain to happen.”
