Open the Gmail message and select its audio attachment. If Gmail displays a play or preview control, use it; if it does not, choose Download and open the saved file in your device’s music player. Gmail’s built-in playback is format- and client-dependent, so downloading is the dependable fallback.
Play an audio attachment in Gmail
- Open Gmail in your browser or app and open the message containing the music file.
- Tap or click the attachment preview (the file card beneath the message).
- If a play or preview control appears, select it and use the controls shown.
- If there is no play control, playback fails, or Gmail reports an error, select Download. Open the downloaded file with the music player on your computer or phone.
Gmail documents opening and downloading attachments, but it does not guarantee native playback for every audio format, browser, app version, or device. A file that previews in one client may only download in another.
Why Gmail may not play the music
Unsupported format or codec
Gmail does not publish a complete list of audio codecs that it will play natively everywhere. An MP3 or WAV may preview in a particular browser while another format, encoding, or container does not. Download the file and try a compatible player when the preview is unavailable.

Attachment behavior can vary between Gmail on the web, the Gmail mobile app, and different browsers. Updating the app or browser and reopening the message can help, but there is no universal playback guarantee.

Attachment warning or blocked file
Gmail may warn about an attachment it cannot verify. Do not bypass a warning casually: confirm that you know the sender and expected the file. If the message or file looks suspicious, leave it unopened and report or delete it instead.
Incomplete or damaged upload
A file that stops immediately, has an implausibly small size, or fails in several players may have been damaged before it reached Gmail. Ask the sender to export the track again and resend it, preferably through Drive for a large file.

How to listen when inline playback fails
On a computer
- Choose Download on the attachment.
- Open your browser’s downloads list or the folder where downloads are saved.
- Double-click the file, or use Open with to choose a music player that supports its format.
On Android or iPhone
- Open the message in the Gmail app and select the attachment.
- Use the download button or the share/open-in control shown by your phone.
- Choose a compatible audio app, or save the file to the device’s Files app and open it from there.
Downloading is not the same as losing access: it creates a local copy while the original remains attached to the email. Delete the local copy afterward if the device is shared or storage is limited.
Send a large music file through Gmail
Personal Gmail accounts have a 25 MB total attachment limit. When a message exceeds that limit, Gmail removes the oversized attachment and inserts a Google Drive link instead. The limit applies to the message’s total attachments, not just one track.

- Upload the audio file to Google Drive.
- In Gmail, compose a message and select Insert files using Drive.
- Choose the file.
- Select a Drive link (or an attachment option when Gmail offers one).
- Review the access prompt. Gmail checks whether the recipients can open the file before you send it; adjust Drive sharing if necessary.
Recipients open the link in Drive’s file interface, where Drive can open audio files. Their ability to listen depends on the sharing permission you set. For private music, use restricted access and add the intended recipients rather than choosing a broad “anyone with the link” setting.

- Verify the publisher and read the extension’s privacy policy.
- Check every requested permission: access to email content can expose sensitive messages.
- Confirm that the extension supports your Chrome version and Gmail interface.
- Review recent user feedback and whether the listing is still maintained.
- Remove it if it is unnecessary or requests broader access than its function requires.
If you only need to hear one attachment, downloading it is usually safer and simpler than granting an extension ongoing mailbox access.
