You can play a terminal-based multiplayer light-cycle game by connecting an SSH client to the ssh-tron project’s published demo: ssh tron.jpillora.com. Press Enter after connecting to spawn. The command is documented by the project, but the public server’s current availability has not been independently verified, so treat it as a connection attempt rather than a guarantee that the service is online.

What you are playing

ssh-tron describes itself as “Multiplayer Tron (Light Cycles) over SSH, written in Go.” It runs inside a terminal instead of opening a graphical game window. Players share a server-hosted arena, leave trails as they move, and try to avoid collisions.

The project’s documented default game speed is 40 milliseconds per tick. Because movement updates arrive over the network, a low-latency connection matters. The README advises keeping latency below the game speed; a connection whose delay approaches or exceeds 40 ms can make steering feel late or inconsistent.

Start the published demo from Windows or Linux

1. Open a terminal

  • Windows: use a terminal application with an SSH client available, such as a current Windows terminal environment that provides the ssh command.
  • Linux: open your usual terminal and confirm that an SSH client is installed.

The available evidence does not establish a Windows-specific installation procedure or a tested Windows configuration. If your terminal reports that ssh is not recognized, install or enable an SSH client for your Windows edition, then retry the command.

2. Connect with the project’s published command

ssh tron.jpillora.com

The project identifies this as its demo server and says the server is in Australia. Geographic distance can add latency, so players far from Australia may notice delayed input. The endpoint’s present reachability was not verified; if the connection fails, the failure may simply mean that the public demo is unavailable or has changed.

3. Spawn into the arena

When the game screen appears, press Enter to spawn, as specified in the project instructions. Follow the on-screen controls or prompts for movement. The supplied project information identifies the spawn key but does not specify a complete, fixed keyboard mapping, so do not assume a particular set of movement keys if the screen shows different instructions.

Make the terminal render the game correctly

Use a terminal with Braille Unicode support

ssh-tron uses Braille Unicode characters to draw parts of the playfield. If the terminal font lacks those glyphs, walls or other elements can appear as empty squares, diamonds, or other missing-character symbols. Choose a Unicode-capable font and ensure the terminal is using a compatible character encoding.

Prefer a dark background

The project recommends a dark terminal background for the intended appearance. This is a visual recommendation, not a gameplay requirement.

Reduce network delay

  • Use a stable connection rather than a congested or highly variable one.
  • Choose a server geographically close to the players when you self-host.
  • Remember that 40 ms is the project’s default tick interval, not a promise about your connection’s ping or a benchmark of performance.

If the public SSH demo does not connect

The published command is optional; connecting to the public endpoint is not required to run the game yourself. First check the command spelling, your internet connection, and whether outbound SSH connections are blocked by a firewall or network policy. If those checks pass and the host still does not respond, the demo may be offline, moved, or restricted. The project documentation does not establish a current uptime status.

A private server avoids dependence on the public endpoint and lets you choose a location nearer to your players.

Self-host ssh-tron

The project documents three server routes: Docker, downloadable binaries, and building from source. The exact commands and release artifacts can change, so use the current project README when performing the installation.

Docker route

The documented Docker example maps container port 2200 to host port 22. This lets players connect to the host’s normal SSH port while the game process listens on port 2200 inside the container. Review your host’s existing SSH service before using that mapping: binding host port 22 can conflict with administrative SSH or require elevated privileges.

Binary route

Download the release binary appropriate for the server’s operating system and architecture, then start it according to the project’s current instructions. Open the selected TCP port in the host firewall and give players the host name or address and port they should use.

Build-from-source route

The project is written in Go and documents compiling it from source. A source build is useful when no suitable binary is available or when you need to track a particular revision, but it adds the responsibility of installing a compatible Go toolchain and following the repository’s current build instructions.

Server settings

The server accepts configurable values for its TCP port and game-world dimensions. The documented defaults are:

Setting Documented default What it controls
TCP port 2200 The port on which the game server listens unless you change it.
World width 60 The horizontal size of the game world.
World height 60 The vertical size of the game world.

The README also documents an optional database mount for saving player scores. Treat score persistence as an add-on rather than a prerequisite for playing.

Basic private-server checklist

  1. Choose Docker, a release binary, or a source build.
  2. Set a TCP port and world dimensions, using port 2200 and a 60-by-60 world if you want the documented defaults.
  3. Expose the chosen port through the host firewall and any cloud or router firewall.
  4. Start the server and test a connection from a separate terminal.
  5. Give players the server address and port, and test from the same regions where they will play.
  6. Add the documented database mount only if you want scores saved between runs.

Terminal ssh-tron versus a graphical alternative

If you want the classic terminal constraint, SSH is the defining feature. If you prefer a conventional 3D game with menus and configurable arenas, Armagetron Advanced is a separate option inspired by Tron. Its official site lists customizable arenas, a HUD, AI bots, and configurable game modes and physics. The site reports version 0.2.9.3.0 on April 18, 2026, with attention to source compatibility with current Linux distributions. The cited information does not establish Windows compatibility for that release, so verify platform support before installing.
