On the default RHEL 8 GNOME desktop, press Print to open the screenshot tool. Choose an area, screen, or window, then capture; GNOME saves the image in ~/Pictures/Screenshots and copies it to the clipboard. For direct captures, use Alt+Print for the active window or Shift+Print for the entire screen.

What RHEL 8 provides by default

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 ships with GNOME 3 as its default desktop environment. A standard installation normally uses GNOME Shell on Wayland, although GNOME Classic and X11 sessions are also available. Your login-session choice, installed updates, keyboard mapping, and custom shortcuts can change the labels or behavior you see.

The built-in GNOME workflow needs no additional screenshot package or account. Use the interactive tool when you need to choose a precise region, window, pointer visibility, or screen. Use a direct shortcut when the target is obvious and you want the fewest steps.

Choose the capture method

Goal Action Result
Choose an area interactively Press Print, select the area mode, drag the handles or crosshair, and capture Only the selected region is saved and copied
Capture one open window Press Alt+Print The active window is captured directly
Capture the entire display Press Shift+Print The full screen is captured directly
Adjust options before capturing Press Print or open the screenshot control from the system menu You can select area, screen, or window and change pointer inclusion

Use the interactive screenshot tool

  1. Open the tool. Press Print. If the key does not open it, open the system menu and select its screenshot button.
  2. Select what to capture. Choose Area and draw around a region, choose Screen for the complete display, or choose Window and select an open window.
  3. Set pointer visibility. Toggle the pointer option if the mouse cursor should or should not appear in the image.
  4. Capture. Click the round capture button. In the interactive interface, Enter, Space, or Ctrl+C can also trigger the capture.
  5. Retrieve the image. Open the Pictures/Screenshots folder under your home directory, or paste the clipboard contents into an image editor, document, message, or terminal application that accepts images.

Print Open the screenshot interface
Alt+Print Capture a window
Shift+Print Capture the entire screen

Inside the interactive interface, the documented single-key controls are:

  • S — switch to area selection.
  • C — switch to screen capture.
  • W — switch to window capture.
  • P — toggle pointer visibility.
  • V — switch between screenshot and screencast modes.
  • Enter, Space, or Ctrl+C — capture.

These are GNOME guidance rather than guarantees for every customized installation. A different session, keyboard layout, or user-defined shortcut may override them.

Where RHEL 8 saves screenshots

GNOME Help documents ~/Pictures/Screenshots as the destination. The filename starts with Screenshot and includes the capture date and time. The same image is placed on the clipboard, so you can paste it immediately without browsing to the folder.

To inspect the folder from a terminal, use the path exactly as shown:

ls -l ~/Pictures/Screenshots

If the file manager is easier, open your home directory, open Pictures, then open Screenshots. Use the file copy when you need an attachment or a durable file; use the clipboard copy when you are moving the image directly into another application.

Which workflow should you use?

Use an area capture for documentation

Area mode is best when you need one control, dialog, error message, or portion of a desktop without exposing unrelated windows. Drag the selection around the exact content before pressing the round capture button.

Use window capture for one application

Window mode avoids manually trimming the borders of a single open application. Select Window, then choose the application window presented by GNOME.

Use full-screen capture for the complete display

Screen mode records everything visible on the selected display. The Shift+Print shortcut is the fastest route when no selection is needed.

Use the interactive controls when the pointer matters

Open the interface instead of using a direct shortcut when you need to decide whether the pointer appears or when you want to switch between area, screen, and window targets before capture.

Troubleshooting RHEL 8 screenshots

Print does nothing

Your session may use a custom keyboard mapping, a different desktop variant, or an overridden shortcut. Open the system menu and use its screenshot button. If that works, the screenshot tool is available and the problem is the key binding rather than the capture function. Check whether your keyboard requires a function-layer key for Print and whether a user-defined shortcut has replaced GNOME’s default.

Alt+Print or Shift+Print produces an unexpected image

Those shortcuts are GNOME’s documented window and full-screen actions, but custom shortcuts or a different installed desktop version can change behavior. Open the interactive tool with Print, then explicitly choose Window or Screen before capturing.

The wrong window is selected

Window capture works with an open window. Bring the intended application to the foreground, reopen the screenshot interface, choose Window, and select the correct window preview rather than drawing an area around it.

The cursor is visible when it should not be

In the screenshot interface, use the pointer toggle before capture. The P key is the documented shortcut for changing that setting.

You cannot find the saved file

Look under the home directory, not the system-wide /Pictures path: ~/Pictures/Screenshots. In a terminal, echo "$HOME/Pictures/Screenshots" prints the expanded location for the current user. Files begin with Screenshot and carry a date-and-time component.

Pasting does not work in the destination application

GNOME copies the image to the clipboard as part of the documented workflow, but applications differ in what they accept from the clipboard. Use the saved PNG from ~/Pictures/Screenshots when the destination expects a file upload or does not accept image paste.

The interface shows screencast controls

GNOME’s screenshot interface also exposes a screenshot-to-screencast switch. Press V to switch modes, then return to screenshot mode before taking a still image.

Or skip the browser setup

GNOME is the right tool for a screenshot of your RHEL desktop. If what you actually need is an automated image of a public web page, ScreenshotNeo makes one request to its website screenshot API instead of requiring you to configure a browser. It accepts the page’s URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF.

Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for parameters and response details. The following calls are runnable examples:

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get('https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot', params={'access_key': 'YOUR_API_KEY', 'url': 'https://stripe.com'}, timeout=90)
open('shot.webp', 'wb').write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and every response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing provides two months free. This service captures a URL on the web, not the local RHEL desktop session, so use GNOME’s built-in tool for desktop windows and ScreenshotNeo for repeatable web-page captures.

Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get the 1,000 monthly screenshots without entering a card.

Practical checklist

  • Confirm that you are in the GNOME desktop session you intend to document.
  • Use Print when you need area, screen, window, or pointer controls.
  • Use Alt+Print for a window and Shift+Print for the whole display when the defaults are available.
  • Check ~/Pictures/Screenshots for the saved file.
  • Paste from the clipboard when the destination accepts image data directly.
  • If a shortcut fails, use the system-menu screenshot button and account for custom keyboard mappings or session differences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does taking a screenshot on RHEL 8 require installing another application?

No. The documented workflow is part of the GNOME desktop supplied with RHEL 8; installing a separate screenshot utility is not required for area, window, or full-screen captures.

Can ScreenshotNeo capture my local RHEL desktop?

No. ScreenshotNeo captures a web page identified by a URL. Use GNOME’s screenshot tool for your local desktop, and use ScreenshotNeo when you need an automated image or PDF of a website.
