Adobe Express and Canva are the strongest free starting points for making a video thumbnail. Adobe Express opens a YouTube thumbnail canvas at 1280×720 pixels and offers templates, photo-editing tools, stock content, background removal and branding controls. Canva has a dedicated YouTube Thumbnail design type, customizable templates, animation, real-time collaboration and JPEG or PNG downloads. Check that each template or asset you choose is included in your plan before publishing.
Which free video thumbnail maker should you use?
Choose Adobe Express if you want to start from a blank canvas or a template and may need to work with a photo, remove its background or apply brand controls. Choose Canva if you want a dedicated YouTube Thumbnail design type, a template-led start, or real-time collaboration with teammates.
The documented workflows for both services focus on YouTube thumbnails. If you are creating artwork for another video platform, check that platform’s recommended dimensions and file requirements before designing. Adobe Express sets its YouTube thumbnail canvas to 1280×720 pixels by default; do not assume that setting is correct for every destination.

How to make a thumbnail that fits your video
Start with the subject and promise of the video, not with a template. A thumbnail should help a viewer recognize what the video is about and distinguish it from other videos. The following steps are design guidance, not a promise that every style will suit every channel.
- Pick one clear subject. Decide what the viewer should notice first: a person, an object, a result or a scene. If the design has several competing focal points, remove or reduce details until one leads.
- Use a still or image that supports the video. Adobe Express lets you upload a still or headshot, or use stock imagery. Prefer imagery that accurately represents the content; avoid suggesting a result or event the video does not deliver.
- Make the main subject easy to distinguish. Use the available editing controls to separate it from the background. In Adobe Express, background removal is part of the documented free workflow. Check the cutout edges at the final display size, especially around hair or other fine details.
- Keep text brief and readable. If words add useful context, use a short phrase and make it visually distinct from the background. Preview the design at a smaller size: if the lettering becomes hard to read, simplify it or make it larger. The title and thumbnail do not need to repeat the same words.
- Use color and effects with restraint. Make the focal point stand out, but avoid effects that obscure the subject or make the image difficult to interpret. A template can provide a starting layout; adjust it to match the actual video rather than treating the template as a finished answer.
- Check branding and consistency. If you use brand controls in Adobe Express, apply the elements that help viewers identify your channel without letting them crowd the subject. In Canva, collaboration can help a team review the same design in real time.
- Preview, then download. Check that text, faces and important details are not cut off and that the exported image opens as expected. Canva explicitly documents JPEG and PNG download. Adobe Express documents downloading the result, but the cited guidance does not specify formats.
Make a thumbnail in Adobe Express
- Open Adobe Express and start a YouTube thumbnail project. The canvas opens at 1280×720 pixels by default.
- Choose a template or a blank canvas. Upload a still or headshot, or browse the available stock content.
- Arrange the subject and text so the main idea is clear. Use the available photo-editing tools and effects as needed; use background removal if separating a subject from its background would help.
- Apply branding controls if you need them, then inspect the design at a reduced viewing size.
- Download the thumbnail. Before publishing, confirm that every selected template, stock asset and effect is available for your intended use under the plan shown in Adobe Express.
Adobe describes a free starting workflow that includes core photo-editing tools, effects, templates, stock content, background removal, brand controls and download. The availability of an individual item can differ, so check that item rather than assuming every asset in the interface is free.

Make a thumbnail in Canva
- Open Canva and choose the YouTube Thumbnail design type.
- Select a template and customize it with imagery, text and other design elements to fit the video.
- If teammates need to review or edit the design, use Canva’s documented real-time collaboration. Animation is also documented, but check the destination’s requirements before relying on an animated design as a thumbnail file.
- Download the finished thumbnail as JPEG or PNG, then inspect the downloaded file before using it.
Canva’s thumbnail page documents templates, customization, animation, real-time collaboration and JPEG or PNG export. It does not establish that every template or asset is free. Check the plan or access label on the exact item before committing to it.
What to check before publishing
- Destination: The 1280×720 default cited here is Adobe Express’s YouTube thumbnail canvas. Check another video service’s current instructions instead of carrying that number over automatically.
- Free access: Verify the specific template, stock image and effect you used. A free editor does not mean every item in its library is free.
- Accuracy: Make sure the image and text represent the video rather than promising something viewers will not find.
- Readability: Preview at a smaller size and check that the subject and any text remain clear.
- Export: Canva documents JPEG and PNG output. For Adobe Express, choose a format available in the download workflow and verify that the resulting file suits the destination.
Common problems and fixes
The image looks crowded
Remove secondary details and make one subject dominant. Shorten any text that competes with the image. If a template is forcing too many elements into the design, switch to a simpler one or start with a blank canvas in Adobe Express.

The subject blends into the background
Choose a clearer source image, adjust the composition or use Adobe Express’s documented background-removal tool. Inspect the result closely so that the edge of the subject looks intentional.
A template or asset is not free
Check the label and terms for that exact item. Replace it with an item shown as available to you, or build from a blank canvas and your own imagery. Do not assume that the free starting option includes every library asset.
The downloaded file does not match what you expected
Open the downloaded file and inspect the full image before uploading it. In Canva, select JPEG or PNG as appropriate. Adobe Express’s cited guidance confirms download but does not specify the available formats, so check the format choices in the export workflow.
