You can remove AI Actions from the Windows 11 File Explorer context menu by disabling the available actions. In Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7344, Microsoft says the AI Actions section disappears when no actions are available or enabled. That is an Insider-build behavior—not confirmation of a universal master switch in every Windows 11 version.
How to remove AI Actions from the Windows 11 context menu
Start by checking whether your Windows build offers settings for the individual AI Actions on your device. The exact settings route can vary, and Microsoft’s December 5, 2025 Insider announcement does not specify one universal path. Disable the actions that are available to you; Microsoft says the section will no longer appear when none remain available or enabled. See Microsoft’s Build 26220.7344 announcement.
If you cannot find individual action controls, your build may not expose the same options. The documented behavior does not establish a separate, always-present master switch labeled “AI Actions.” Avoid assuming that a setting in a different Windows build will have the same name or effect.
AI Actions controls versus the redesigned context menu
Microsoft announced broader File Explorer context-menu customization on August 17, 2026. The redesigned menu adds a “Customize menu” shortcut and a Settings page under Personalization. Those controls let users turn built-in Windows commands on or off, choose whether app extensions appear in the main menu or a submenu, and hide the submenu. Microsoft did not specifically identify an AI Actions toggle in that announcement, so these controls should not be treated as a confirmed way to remove that section.

| Control | Scope | Availability and effect |
|---|---|---|
| AI Actions availability | Individual available actions | Microsoft’s December 2025 Insider note says the section disappears if no actions are available or enabled. The note does not establish a single master switch or a universal settings path. |
| Redesigned context-menu customization | Built-in Windows commands, app extensions, and submenu visibility | Announced as rolling out to Windows Insiders in August 2026. Microsoft did not name AI Actions as a specific toggle. |
To check for the redesigned controls, look for “Customize menu” in File Explorer’s context menu or for the related page under Settings > Personalization. If neither appears, the feature may not have reached your installed build. Microsoft described the rollout as an Insider rollout, and its September 22, 2026 preview notes for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 do not mention the redesign. The available announcements do not establish general availability or one Settings path for all current builds. See Microsoft’s context-menu redesign announcement and the September 22, 2026 Windows 11 preview notes.
Why AI Actions appear for some files but not others
AI Actions are options in File Explorer’s right-click menu, not a universal command shown for every file. The available actions can depend on file type and which apps or services are available on the device.

When Microsoft introduced image actions in Canary Build 27938 on September 8, 2025, it listed Bing Visual Search, Blur Background, Erase Objects, and Remove Background for .jpg, .jpeg, and .png files. Later Release Preview notes also described a Copilot Summarize action for Microsoft 365 files stored in OneDrive and SharePoint. Microsoft said that action required an active Microsoft 365 subscription and a Copilot license; both Microsoft accounts and Microsoft Entra ID accounts were supported. These are descriptions from specific 2025 announcements, not a guarantee that every action is available on every PC today. Read the original notes for the Canary image actions and Release Preview actions.
The September 12, 2025 Release Preview announcement said the described experience was not then available to customers in the European Economic Area. That is a dated availability statement; it does not establish current regional availability.

What to do if the section remains visible
- Check whether any AI Actions remain enabled or available for the file types you use. Microsoft’s disappearance statement applies when none remain.
- Try a file type that would not normally offer the actions. The section can depend on the file and available apps or services.
- Check whether your Windows build has the “Customize menu” or Personalization controls. They are part of the broader redesign, not a specifically confirmed AI Actions switch.
- Do not assume the absence of those controls means your Windows installation is broken; Microsoft announced the redesign as an Insider rollout.
