Microsoft’s Xbox update announced on November 16, 2022, began rolling out later that day with two headline changes: direct Discord voice-channel access from Xbox consoles and a redesigned Captures experience. It also added wish-list gifting and sale alerts, power-mode information, direct streaming destinations, and smaller interface updates. These details describe that 2022 release, not necessarily current Xbox software.
What the November 2022 Xbox update included
| Feature | What Microsoft announced |
|---|---|
| Discord voice | Linked accounts could browse Discord servers and join voice channels from the Xbox Guide, with a participant preview before joining. |
| Noise suppression | Discord Voice noise suppression was enabled on Xbox Series X|S, with an option to turn it off in call options. |
| Captures app | A separate app in the Guide and My games & apps improved clip and screenshot viewing, management, editing, and copying to an external drive. |
| Capture quality | Xbox Series X|S captures at 720p and 1080p received a bitrate increase; Xbox Insider Delta preview notes described it as up to 30%. |
| Wish lists | Recipients could be notified when someone shared a wish list and sent a gift, and users could receive sale alerts for wish-listed items. |
| Power controls | Xbox added comparisons for Shutdown (energy saving) and Sleep modes. New Series X|S consoles defaulted to Shutdown, which users could change in settings. |
| Streaming | Direct streaming destinations listed were Twitch, Lightstream, and Streamlabs Studio. The Twitch Xbox app became viewing-only. |
How joining Discord voice chat worked
- Link your Discord account to Xbox.
- Open the Xbox Guide.
- Go to Parties & chats and select Discord.
- Choose an available server, then select its voice channel.
- Review the participant preview and join.
The announcement described this as browsing servers and entering voice channels directly from the console, rather than relying on a separate device for the join step. Its noise-suppression statement applied specifically to Xbox Series X|S; it did not extend that claim to Xbox One.
What changed for game clips and screenshots
A dedicated Captures app
Captures became a separate app available from the Guide and from My games & apps. Microsoft said it improved how players viewed, managed, and edited clips and screenshots, and added the ability to copy them to an external drive.

Xbox Insider Delta preview notes dated October 27, 2022 reported up to a 30% increase in bitrate for 720p and 1080p captures on Xbox Series X|S. The final November announcement confirmed an increased bitrate for those resolutions but did not repeat the percentage, so the 30% figure belongs to the preview documentation rather than a universal measured result for every capture.

Wish-list gifting and sale notifications
The update expanded wish-list behavior in two ways. A recipient could be notified when another person shared a wish list and sent a gift, while wish-list owners could receive notifications when listed items went on sale. The release did not establish that these alerts or gifting rules were identical in every region or store configuration.

Shutdown versus Sleep power modes
Xbox added power-use comparisons for Shutdown (energy saving) and Sleep. Shutdown uses less power while the console is off; Sleep is intended for faster wake and standby features. Microsoft did not publish numeric consumption or savings values in this announcement. New Xbox Series X|S consoles defaulted to Shutdown mode, and owners could change the setting in the console’s power options.
